It’s been three years since Texan rock outfit The Mars Volta have released an album, and for some fans it has been three years too long. Then seemingly out of nowhere we caught wind just a few weeks ago that no only are they working on a new record, but they’ve almost finished it.
Cedric Bixler-Zavala, the Grammy-award winning band’s frontman, spoke to fans a few weeks back to deliver the news writing online “New Volta almost done. Vocals done. Just trying to rebutcher it and finish guitar. In studio until this week then on to Mexico to add more quantum entanglement to it. The sonogram of the little beast is looking very good.”
The LP, the band’s sixth and now known as Noctourniquet and the band have delivered a 30-second sample of the lead single off the record ‘The Malkin Jewel’, which will drop February 14th. We’ve embedded it below so have a listen.

The new album comes at a time for Cedric and his bandmate Omar Rodriguez-Lopez that is no doubt busy, the band they both came from previously, At The Drive-In, have just announced their reformation after years of bitterness between the members.
At The Drive-In split under acrimonious circumstances in 2001 when frontman Cedric Bixler-Zavala felt that some of the other members were holding him back creatively. Cedric and Omar both left and went on to form The Mars Volta, while the remaining three members of the group formed the band Sparta.
Noctourniquet is scheduled for release on March 27, 2012
