Are you frothing at the mouth at the prospect of a new Soundgarden record? If not, why not? The grunge veterans as-of-yet untitled LP will be their first since Down on the Upside was released in 1996 where it went #1 on the ARIA charts.

The band broke up a few years later but reunited in 2010 to play Lollapalooza and recently toured down under as part of the Big Day Out 2012.

Now the band, fronted by Chris Cornell, have released a teaser of a track, ‘Live To Rise’, off the new record which is being used as part of the soundtrack for the forthcoming superhero action movie, The Avengers.

The highly anticipated record has been a long time coming, after getting delayed by a few months while Cornell and his bandmates perfected their sound.

“Musically I think the personality of the record — it’s very warm to me and adventurous like all our albums are were,” Cornell said in an interview last year about the record.

“It doesn’t sound like a throwback to any previous period and were definitely approaching songs in different ways than we’ve done…but we always did that from album to album so it feels like the genuine next step to me. It doesn’t feel nostalgic, it feels forward.”

“It sounds like Soundgarden. But I wouldn’t say it’s similar. I think there are parts of it that are there to remind everybody of us, but we’ve always progressed from album to album.”

Cornell has promised that the band will return with the new album of material in tow sometime later this year. Speaking to Triple M last month Cornell said, “We will come back soon after our album comes out and do a proper headlining tour.”
