We start this weeks mixtape off with an exclusive remix for the Dappled Cities track ‘Run With The Wind’ by Tales in Space, Dancing Heals, Melbourne solo artist Maxi, The Fumes, Zulu Winter & Northeast Party House.

Dappled Cities – Run With The Wind (Tales In Space Remix)

Sydney group Dappled Cities are set to release their fourth studio album in August, with first single ‘Run With The Wind’ running rings round the airwaves as we speak. It swaggers along like a proper rock hit, but the production’s infused with all manner of electronic textures which set it apart. Seizing the song’s dancefloor potential are Tales in Space, who just released their own take on the track. Stripping the production right back and throwing in a pulsating double-time rhythm; the remix adds jovial screeches and bleeps.

Dancing Heals – Charlie Brown
Melbourne four piece Dancing Heals release their debut album ‘Into The Night’ this week. Recorded in October last year in Melbourne, the guys hit that sweet spot between nostalgia and futurism. Much like Jimmy Hawk and the Endless Party, the band mix shimmering guitar and synth textures with sweeping and endearing melodies. No better can this be seen than on ‘Charlie Brown’, with a perfect level of guitar twang and an inescapably catchy chorus. Plenty of bands look to drum up nostalgia to suck you in; few bands do it with such ease.

Maxi – In A Little While

‘In A Little While’ is the first single from Maxi’s debut EP. The Melbourne songstress combines light synthesisers into funk grooves and as the song progresses handclaps and cowbells are incorporated. Maxi’s strong vocals ensure that the chorus is etched into your brain. Written in her parent’s attic, the song signals that at the very least this singer-songwriter is on her way out of the darkness.

The Fumes – Dance In Costume

Spoken word and dirty rock characterise this bluesy single. The Sydney duo create an atmosphere reminiscent of your dodgiest drunken story. It’s also probably as raw and as real as your hangover was the next day. The song is reportedly about a son who outgrows his father. The band are undertaking a tour along the East Coast in early July.

Zulu Winter – Bitter Moon

One of the early buzz bands of 2012, Zulu Winter’s debut album Language was released in May. This track is a good indicator of what to expect from the album. With atmospheric synths, punchy riffs and memorable lyrics, ‘Bitter Moon’ is an easy listening pop tune. Although it’s less immediate than the bands two previous singles, ‘We Should Be Swimming’ and ‘Silver Tongue’, it’s by no means a song you would want to miss out on when they tour here for Splendour in the Grass.

Northeast Party House – Pascal Cavalier

The latest from Melbourne natives Northeast Party House is a funky 4/4 disco-drum driven dance track, augmented with honky Fender guitar licks and Bootsy Collins reminiscent bass lines. Synth textured bridges build into a vocally strong and hook-laden chorus making for an archetypal party tune that begs for a packed-out dance floor.
