It’s looking more and more like Perth’s psychelicious cosmonauts, Tame Impala, will be joining Gotye as Australia’s most ubiquitous international musical ambassador of the year.

They may not quite have the lead on Mr. Wally De Backer for plaudits and accolades, including that particular duet being named the highest selling single of 2012 and scooping a whopping five nominations for the upcoming ARIA Awards; but Tame Impala are already making significant inroads when it comes to global recognition.

The band’s highly anticipated sophomore album Lonerism was recently released to rave reviews across music media (including Tone Deaf), and has since backed up its critical clout with commercial sales to match. Now compounding their Australian and UK chart success, Tame Impala have now cracked the US Top 40.

While Australians have shown their patriotism, helping Lonerism debut at #4 on the Australian album charts, the UK also flocked to the album’s rarefied glow of Beatles styled techniques, debuting #14 in the UK Album Charts, which sees Tame Impala as the latest addition to an elite group of Aussie acts who have achieved Top 15 UK Album Chart positions in the last ten years, including Gotye, Crowded House, AC/DC, Kylie Minogue, Jet, Grinderman, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, and The Vines.

Now compounding their Australian and UK chart success, Tame Impala have now cracked the US Top 40.

Lonerism has debuted on Billboard‘s Top 200 Album Chart at #34, which marks the first Top 200 chart position for the group, while the record’s kaleidoscopic splashes, deft production, and melodious affectations has already found favour with US taste-makers Pitchfork, who gave the record their blessing with a rare and generous 9.5 review; while American YouTube sensation PS22 have also given Tame Impala the ‘Gotye treatment’ by covering new single ‘Feels Like We Only Go Backwards’.

Tame Impala’s chart success couldn’t come at a better time, as Kevin Parker and his cohorts kick off their North American tour on November 7, with half of their dates across the nation already sold out.

Their North American tour is part of a ruthlessly well conceived global schedule, following on from a promotional visit to Europe and the United Kingdom this month, before returning home in December for a national headline tour, as well as hitting up a large share of Australia’s summer music festival season that takes in Meredith Music FestivalHomebake’s 2012 ‘Global Edition‘, and finishing with Pyramid Rock Festival at year’s end. A carefully plotted touring schedule that’s scattered around their own headline tour.

Australia’s next biggest thing? Pretty much…
