Suitably capitalising on the current Aussie invasion, a campaign unwittingly kick-started by Gotye before being followed by international signings for Husky and San Cisco, then Tame Impala’s storming critical and commercial success internationally, the music world’s largest industry event, South By Southwest has announced the first Australian acts to feature at next year’s conference.

Following on from the list of keynote speakers that have been curated for SXSW 2013’s music panels, a report from Noise11 confirms the Austin, Texas event has officially invited 16 artists from Australia, and 3 from New Zealand, to perform at next year’s 27th iteration of the event.

Leading the list of acts is Something For Kate, which means the beloved trio will be following on this year’s touring schedule for their latest release, the excellent Leave Your Soul To Science (read the Tone Deaf review here), which includes performances for this summer’s festival season (at Queenscliff Music FestivalGolden Days and Homebake) and their recently announced hometown New Year’s bash with Spiderbait.

Also representing the lucky country at next year’s SXSW is 360, following on from winning an Australian Independent Music Award for Falling & Flying, which has also earned the Aussie MC several ARIA nominations for this year’s awards. Fellow hip-hop artist, Seth Sentry will be bringing his likeable everyman stylings to the industry event.the 16 confirmed acts have been drawn from over 200 who have already registered in what is the biggest early response ever from the Australian music industry

The other Australian acts that will be playing the 2013 conference include Perth’s Sugar Army and San Cisco – capitalising on their recent worldwide deal with Mississippi independent label Fat Possum. Other bands making the trek are Twerps, Emma Louise, Bearhug, Vaudeville Smash, Gold Fields, The Swiss, Nolita Knights, The Chevelles, Hiatus Kaiyote, Atlas Genius, and Transcription Of Organ Music.

Meanwhile New Zealand’s Tom Lark, Six60, and Kidsof88 have been cordially invited to SXSW 2013 as well.

It’s the first round of acts whose applications have been accepted by the industry event, which this year will see approx. 19,000 industry professionals attending.

As previously reported, the 16 confirmed acts have been drawn from over 200 who have already registered in what is the biggest early response ever from the Australian music industry, with organisers stating: “We are expecting 750+ Australian delegates this year at the world’s leading music industry event and more than 300 bands from here to apply for crucial showcases,” says SXSW Australia, New Zealand and Hawaiian Representative of ten years, Phil Tripp.

Tripp also gave prospective SXSW-goers and Tone Deaf readers a handy ‘how to’ guide to applying to the event, and applications are still open until November 7 through Sonicbids, meaning that SXSW 2013 is likely to have a huge Australian presence.
