Yesterday’s news that former Queens Of The Stone Age bassist Nick Oliveri had (somehow) patched up differences with Josh Homme, contributing vocals to their forthcoming star-studded album seemed to overshadow a second tidbit of juicy news. Namely that Oliveri had reunited with another former collective: Kyuss Lives!

Only that they’re not going to be Kyuss Lives! for much longer with Antiquiet reporting that with the return of Nick Oliver to bass duties, the band are in fact retiring at next year’s Soundwave Festival in favour of forming a new act, with a similar lineup but completely different name to put an end to the string of legal wrangling between bandmates old and new.

Firstly, the surprising news of Nick Oliveri’s return to Kyuss Lives! was originally announced on the Facebook page of Mondo Generator, Oliveri’s mainstay band since being sacked from QOTSA in 2004, with a simple message saying, “Nick has re-joined Kyuss.”

Oliveri was temporarily replaced with Scott Reeder, one of the earliest Kyuss members, following lengthy court trials in which the troubled bassist narrowly avoided 15 years in jail following a domestic abuse case that got out of hand involving a SWAT team and a house arrest.

Oliveri originally joined former Kyuss member Brant Bjork in 2010 to promote co-founder John Garcia’s new solo ventures. But a series of litigation over the name, started by former members Scott Reeder and Queens Of The Stone Age linchpin Josh Homme, forced the band to rename the new incarnation as Kyuss Lives! (confused yet?)

Several more federal lawsuits, stop-start tours, and a whole mess of legal documents later let to a court ruling against John Garcia last month barring him from using the Kyuss Lives! moniker on any future recordings, with the trial’s judge even encouraging Garcia directly to consider a new name.

It seems Garcia has now taken his advice, as alongside Brant Bjork, Nick Oliveri and guitarist Bruno Fevery, are pleased to introduce their new musical project: Vista Chino.

The new group is presumably named after the suburb in Palm Springs, California, and as Antiquiet reports the newly christened quartet are currently recording new material in anticipation of a 2013 worldwide release that will coincide with major touring plans.

Which all means that Kyuss Lives! appearance at Australia’s own sold-out Soundwave Festival in February, 2013 will be its last before the band retire the name for the brand new Vista Chino, with the band touting they’ll play a hybrid set of Kyuss classics as well as new material.
