As if sweeping last week’s ARIA Awards Ceremony wasn’t enough, multi-instrumentalist/hit sensation/global dominator Gotye – who begins his Australian headline tour tonight in Adelaide – is now up for several gong’s at America’s night of nights, the Grammy Awards.

The ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ songwriter has earned three nominations for the 55th Grammy Awards, alongside international stars like R&B storyteller Frank Ocean, who earned nods in three of the four top categories, as well as Kanye West, The Black Keys, fun., Mumford & Sons and Jay-Z.

Gotye’s ubiquitous single, which helped him storm the United States and Europe, leading to it recently being named the highest selling single of 2012, has now led Mr Wally De Backer to potential Grammys glory.

The Kimbra-featuring breakup duet is up for the Record of the Year award as well as the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, facing off against the likes of Frank Ocean, Taylor Swift, The Black Keys, and Kelly Clarkson in the former category; and the likes of Florence + The Machine’s ‘Shake It Out and Maroon 5’s co-hit with Whiz Khalifa, ‘Payphone’ in the latter.

New York City pop troupe fun. are also squaring off directly against De Backer in both categories with their Janelle Monae-featuring hit single, ‘We Are Young’. Given that Gotye’s all-conquering single is already one of most streamed songs of the year according to the UK’s new streaming chart, and its body-paint video clip became one of the most watched YouTube videos of all time, (currently sitting at over 350+ million views) – Mr. Wally DeBacker is a strong contender to take out either category.

Gotye’s third nomination is in the Best Alternative Music Album category for Making Mirrors, the album to which ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ comes from, which has obviously enjoyed a boost in profiled thanks to the unprecedented success of the single. as well as a favourable review from US tastemakers Pitchfork.

Other nominations competing for the Best Alternative Music Album include the recently recuperated Björk for her 2001 album Biophilia, M83’s widescreen electro opus Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, Tom Waits’ 17th studio LP Bad As Me, and Fiona Apple’s first album in seven years, the outrageously titled The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than The Driver Of The Screw And Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do.

Other artists sweeping the announced nominations include Odd Future associate and popular crooner Frank Ocean, who made waves earlier this year ahead of his major label debut Channel Orange when he released an open letter online acknowledging his fluid sexual preferences as well as an unrequited love affair with another man in his youth.

He’s transcended the controversy and sole more than 300,000 copies after debuting at #2 on the Billboard Top 200, as The Chicago Tribune points out., and Channel Orange a favourite to take out Album of the Year.

Rock fans meanwhile can enjoy that the Album of the Year category is going not to pop and mainstream acts, but Jack White – for his solo debut Blunderbuss – and dynamic garage duo The Black Keys, for El Camino. Rounding out the Album of the Year nominations are fun. for Some Nights and nu-folkies Mumford & Sons, for their sophomore album Babel; not surprising given it was 2012’s most successful album – sales wise.

The 55th Grammy Awards will take place on February 10th 2013 at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles, and should Gotye win any (or fingers crossed – all) three of his categories, it’ll mark the end of an absolutely killer year of record-breaking accolades. Still, you have to feel bad for De Backer – there’s no way 2013 is ever going to compare…
