Following a string of staggering Spiegeltent performances over the weekend – as part of the Sydney Festival – Lianne La Havas’ is winning over Australian fans note by note. With 2012 seeing the British chanteuse rack up 4.6 million YouTube hits, 23,000 tickets sold, and over 5 million plays on Spotify, 2013 is off to a really great start. Check out her sizzle reel hereto learn more.

The 23-year-old’s sublime debut album Is Your Love Big Enough (Warners) has been called by The LA Times a reminder of “the power of the artful lyric, the soulful (nonhistrionic) reading of said lyric, and the importance of smart, understated production.” So warmly has the debut album been received that it collected a nomination for this year’s Barclaycard Mercury Prize.

The talented local ladies who will be opening the stage for La Havas on her Brisbane and Melbourne dates this week.

In Brisbane this Thursday, local girl Thelma Plum will be bringing her haunting, spiritual and soulful music to The Zoo’s stage. An old soul with an emotional trembling vibrato akin to Tracey Chapman with the personal narrator’s heart of her hero Paul Kelly, Thelma displays an authenticity and honesty beyond her years. Unearthed by Triple J with her song Father Said Thelma was invited to perform at the 2012 National Indigenous Music Awards.

Thelma’s diverse cultural background with Indigenous, Australian and Brazilian heritage has shaped her worldview and provided much inspiration to draw on. Plum likes her music just how she likes her honey – “Super sweet.”

The following night in Melbourne, audiences at The Corner Hotel will be treated to not one, but two support acts. Starting things up is local songstress, Kathryn Rollins. Shrouded in many layers of creative cognition, Kathryn Rollins makes music that grumbles with heart and sparks with emotional rawness. She finds her place in amongst the more sincere members of the musical world, with influences like PJ Harvey, Bon Iver and Lykke Li.

Next up, with songs that rush at you from unexpected angles, a killer voice and an audacious live show, is Melbourne melodist Ainslie Wills. With her neo/folk/rock sound, Wills’ music is steadily making its way in and around Australia, Europe and America. With her debut album set for an early 2013 release and having shared the stage with Gossling, Husky, The Paper Kites and more recently 360 on an episode of SBS’ Rockwiz, Ainslie Wills is fast becoming a name on everyone’s lips.
