Great news for this year’s Adelaide Festival-goers with some great acts being announced.

The notable Canadian dark ambient sound artist, Tim Hecker will perform a highly-anticipated solo set, exploratory art duo Hype Williams  combine performance art with bass mutations and dark purveyors of minimalist modern industrial music, Raime will bring their celebrated live show.

These additions will complete the already impressive line-up of sound-artists including: Lustmord, Actress  Ben Frost , Robin Fox and more, and act as replacements to Emeralds and James Leyland Kirby’s projects: V/VM and The Caretaker.

Emeralds have now officially released a statement announcing their break-up and Kirby is currently not able to travel to Australia for Adelaide Festival’s Unsound Adelaide.

Raime are the shadowy UK duo who debuted on new label Blackest Ever Black. The pair have honed a shadowy minimalist techno, chamber ambient and modern industrial sound to pair a commanding and visually stunning live show. Their debut album, Quarter Turns Over A Living Line was released in November 2012.

Tim Hecker explores the intersection of noise, dissonance and melody, fostering an approach to songcraft which is both physical and emotive. His work has been described as ‘structured ambient’, ‘tectonic colour plates’ and ‘cathedral electronic music’. Pitchfork recognised his album Harmony in Ultraviolet as a ‘top recording of 2006’. He also creates music for contemporary dance and sound-art installations under the name Jetone. In addition to this show, Hecker will be playing a set collaborating with Daniel Lopatin on Thursday, 14 March also for Unsound Adelaide.

British bass weirdos, Hype Williams is Dean Blunt and Inga Copeland. They have a reputation for hectic live shows which are mind-bending, visceral, surreal and challenging: definitely not for the feint-hearted.

Taking the name from a notorious hip-hop music video creator, the duo create music engraned with early dubstep and grime, peppered with elements of pop and R&B. They avoid conforming to formulaic genres, concentrating on fluidity and ‘free wandering’ in their sound, focusing people’s attention on the art, not the hype.

Adelaide Festival Artistic Director David Sefton said: “Without question, Unsound is one of the most interesting things happening in music today. I am delighted to be able to present this ‘Festival within a Festival’ and for Australia to see these extraordinary artists.”
