Ahead of their one off reformation performance for the Drones-curated All Tomorows Patries festival ‘I’ll Be Your Mirror’ this Sunday, two members of classic Aussie rock outfit Beasts of Bourbon have teamed up to release their collaborative covers record Runaways.

Beasts members and industry veterans, Kim Salmon and Spencer P. Jones penned the album during their month long residency at Fitzroy’s Old Bar last year, the group’s press release notes that the pair played “gigs as a single entity early last year [with] an expectation of chaos – here were two musos with the swagger and baggage of a lifetime in rock ‘n’ roll.”

With the Salmon and Jones collaboration resulting in the penning of a group of both original tracks and reconstructed covers, the ‘expectation of chaos’ has seemed to have had a possitive effect on the duo. The covers to be featured on the record are thouroughly varied, with tracks by Kanye West to Peggy Lee, the Stooges and Alex Chilton of Big Star fame, as well as Chester Burnett and Jeffrey Lee Pierce – all reworked and broken down.

The duo’s press release further states that “revealing monologues and rants were added to old blues songs and standards, and new songs were deconstructed rather than rendered. Working with engineer Adrian Akkerman of Inclubator Recording Studio, Salmon and Jones coaxed 12 songs for the album, coming in at a neat 49 minutes.”

Spencer P Jones and Kim Salmon are set to release Runaways tonight at The Tote in Melbourne (details below) with the lead tracks from the record ‘A Bitter Projection’ and ‘Monkey’ (feat. Ross Beaton from Eagle And The Worm) available as a limited edition 45” vinyl single.

The release of Runaways is an exciting precursor to the the Beasts Of Bourbon reunion gig at Melbourne’s I’ll Be Your Mirror this weekend. With the entire original lineup of the band featuring Tex Perkins, Spencer P Jones, Kim Salmon, James Baker and Boris Sujfovic getting back together for the Sunday of All Tomorows Partie, curated by The Drones, it’s sure to be a stellar performance.

Runaways is available for purchase digitally from Kim Salmon’s bandcamp now, set times and details of ATP Melbourne here.
