If you can picture Chris Isaak heading up a 90s guitar band, with a dash of island isolation mixed in, then that wouldn’t be too far from the mark in describing Tasmanian 3 piece New Saxons’ sound.

After featuring at the Triple J unearthed One Movement showcase, their first single Teenager receiving air play and honing their live show by regularly supporting touring bands within their home state, New Saxons have put together a little EP, with the help of Scott Horscroft (The Presets, The Panics) and they want to share it with everybody.

You’re launching your new single, ‘Crocodile Tears’ with a few shows. Tell us about the song. What inspired it and what is it about?

I guess in a nut shell it about missed opportunities in romance and how you should always put a positive spin on any failed relationship because you learn and grow from them… it could alternatively be about sad crocodiles.

It follows other songs such as ‘Stangers’ and ‘Is It True’ how do you think these tracks differ from ‘Crocodile Tears’?

All our tracks are more or less love songs; Strangers deals with Jealousy, Is It True is about unrequited love, and Crocodile Tears looks at past relationships. It would be easy to say the differences between the tracks are entirely musical, but I think context is what makes the songs stand apart.

Both ‘Crocodile Tears’ and ‘Is It True’ have been online since last year, why did you choose the former as the single over some of your other tracks?

We chose it as a single because we felt it represents the direction we are heading as a band and as songwriters. Its hooky, its honest and most importantly it has a raw quality that is true to our live shows. I also think anyone can relate to its themes of ‘lost love’ too.

You also have an EP coming out soon. When will it be released?

We launched our EP in Hobart a couple months ago. It is currently sold at all venues we are playing at!

And what can we expect from the EP?

Well, the outer sleeve is constructed from the finest cardboard, no expense was spared! I hope people get a kick out of it, its rock and roll with no ego.

Tell us about the recording process. What was that like?

We recorded the EP at Forgotten Valley Studio North of Sydney. It was mixed by Scott Horscroft (The Presets, The Panics). The studio is basically in the countryside so it was more or less a holiday playing music, our fire building skills were put to the test on a regular basis too.

What’s on heavy rotation on your iPod at the moment?

Edwyn Collins’ album Gorgeous George. Most people know the single A Girl Like You, but it is a pretty solid album too… and I can never say no to a little Weezer or Prince!

If you could collaborate with any living Australian artist who would it be?

My head says Dan Sultan, but my heart says Farnsy.

What are your plans for the rest of 2013?

Playing and writing.
