Call it crazy, but we’re convinced one of the biggest joys in life and music is a good remix or cover. Why? Because it means a musician loves a song so much that they’re willing to publicly re-interpret it. To celebrate how special that is we’re taking a look at some of the best new remixes and covers to come out of Australia and beyond. Check out this week’s picks.

AlunaGeorge Cover ‘La La La’ by Naughty Boy & Sam Smith

Taking chillwave RnB to a whole new level, the amazing duo that is AlunaGeorge covered ‘La La La’ during a visit to BBC’s Radio 1 Live Lounge which has recently been the proprietor of some weird ass covers (Queens Of The Stoneage doing ‘Blurred Lines’, anyone?). Vocalist Aluna Francis’ little girl drawl adds a new innocence and dimension to the tune and proves to be just as hypnotic as the Naughty Boy original. The duo are currently promoting their LP Body Music , check out our review here.

The Basement Tapes Remix Disclosure’s ‘When A Fire Starts To Burn’

The ever-elusive producer from Auckland has given us another tasty remix treat in the form of a Disclosure track. Taken from Disclosure’s debut album ‘Settle’ the remix adds more synth textures and a different groove. The Basement Tape’s The Vapour E.P. is out now and features some electrified hip-hop beats mixed with soul-heavy vocals. Listen here.

Classixx Remix The Preatures’ ‘Is This How You Feel?’

While managing to retain the Fleetwood Mac references that make The Preatures’ original tune so great, Classixx’ rendition takes away some of the rock ‘n’ roll edge and makes the song sound super of the moment. The duo made up of Michael David and Tyler Blake have recently strayed from being known as the remix dudes by releasing their own record (check out our review here), but they’re back on the re-appropriation bandwagon and reminding us how they gained the title in the first place.

Beck Remixes JJ Doom’s ‘Banished’

“What?” is the appropriate reaction when reading that one of the kings of indie rock has remixed a hard rap song. But like most everything that Beck does that sounds completely insane (see: Song Reader) this one kinda works. So that’s the good news. The great news is JJ Doom are releasing an album of remixes of their own tunes featuring the likes of  Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood, Clams Casino, Dave Sitek, Damon Albarn and more.

Gobby Remixes Dan Bodan’s ‘Anonymous’

Look, we aren’t ones to say “we told ya so” but now that British singer/producer Dan Bodan has been picked up by Pitchfork and remixed by some production heavyweights, it feels only right. From his first release ‘Aaron’ which featured in our mixtape back in October last year, the sad man with the crooning vocals has grown into one hell of a musician.
