‘Get Hockey’ Liberally Mashes Daft Punk With Joe Hockey

With just days left until voters hit the polls for Saturday’s Federal Election, plenty of enterprising creatives have hit upon lampooning the campaign trail and all the bizarre twists and embarrassing gaffes it inevitably generates. Enter YouTube user and Australian lawyer Hugh Atkin, who’s got a good track record of creating clever politcally-themed covers of popular songs, using various news clips and video footage, that are custom-built to go viral.

His latest mash-up masterpiece combines those ‘sex appeal’ comments from Tony Abbott, adds in Nickelback-loving Shadow Treasurer Joe Hockey, and stirs vigorously with Daft Punk’s ‘Get Lucky’ to create the delicious ‘Get Hockey’. It’s easier to watch and giggle than describe, but we can certainly added it to the pile of musically inspired political memes that stocked up of late. We’ve already seen a Canberra indie punk band convincing pollies to lypsinc and muck about in their music video, a Game Of Thrones hip-hop parody that featured Julian Assange giving a drag performance as John Farnham, and most recently, a campaign to get Dan Kelly’s swearing yet lilting ‘Drunk On Election Night’ the #1 spot on iTunes… On Election Night. (via Junkee)

New Sleigh Bells Single, Bat For Lashes Teams Up With Jon Hopkins

Sleigh Bells have released details of their third studio album, Bitter Rivals, sharing the title track and lead single with fans ahead of the record’s release (on 11th October through Liberation Music in Australia) with a new music video. Self-produced by the band’s own Derek Miller, the new track hits like a car-crash between a mack truck and VW Beetle; a three and a half minute sugar rush of cartoonish metal guitars, bubblegum pop hooks, and the punk cheerleader yelps of Alexis Krauss. Spells good things for Bitter Rivals after the decidedly lacklustre results of last year’s Reign Of Terror.

Where Sleigh Bells offers exciting, jagged contrasts, the new collaboration between Natasha ‘Bat For Lashes’ Khan and Jon Hopkins represents sumptuous synergy. The British songstress and the forthcoming Meredith electronic-maker have partnered to deliver ‘Garden’s Heart‘. The catalyst for the musical match was made through the upcoming Kevin MacDonald-directed film How I Live Now, an action/drama starring Saorise Ronan, who is caught up in World War 3 while on holiday with her family. The score for the film was composed by Jon Hopkins (his latest filmic work following the 2010 Monsters soundtrack)and the collab features Khan’s evocative, breathy vocals pillowed by Hopkins’ sighing synth work and an insistent guitar pulse. The music video, starring Saorise Ronan, also marks the Bat For Lashes singer’s directorial debut – talented lasses each.

Dead Weather Begin Work On New Album

Jack White’s never one to rest on his laurels and even though he released his debut solo album Blunderbuss to much fanfare last year, he’s focussing back on his side-projects for his next musical project. White’s label Third Man Records recently tweeted a photo of the (semi)supergroup Dead Weather hanging outside the Nashville HQ with an attached note that they’d been in the studio punching out songs for a new albumFeaturing White on drums, The Kills Alison Mosshart out front, QOTSA’s Dean Fertita on guitar and Raconteurs/Saboteurs and Greenhorns bassist Jack Lawrence, a new outing would mark the band’s first recording since 2010’s Sea Of Cowards. “All the Raconteurs and all the Dead Weather live in Nashville now, so we often go on trips together, because we’re all just good pals. We’ve recorded some things, too,” White said earlier in the year (via Rolling Stone)
