In 2013, one Sydney singer-songwriter has been on everybody’s lips, his name is Andy Bull.

His meteoric rise has benefited by his huge hits ‘Keep On Running’ and ‘Baby I Am Nobody Now’ abusing the radio frequencies this year and being one of Triple J’s most played artists.

With the excitement reaching boiling point with his upcoming album one of the most anticipated this year, Bull has embarked on the Baby I Am Nobody Now tour.

Newcastle’s Small Ballroom is a young venue that is growing rapidly. On a Thursday night, the venue was almost exceeding capacity as a collection of the cities hip and indie congregated to the Ballroom. New venues can struggle to attract a real following however management struck gold with booking Andy Bull, a strong development for live music in the Hunter.

Coming along for the ride was new pop-folk songstress Imogen Bel. Equipped with her Nord keyboard, Bel struck a lone silhouette whilst charming with her powerful and technically brilliant voice.

The rendition of ‘Snow Covered Hill’ caught fans in a trance while her beautiful voice, gorgeous production and tremendous  songwriting took centre stage. A great performance for the guest star, Imogen Bel is definitely one to look out for.

People crowded around the centre stage to be within an arms grasp of the alt-pop maestro. Bull’s new four-piece band had a great effect on the crowd as stirring guitar riffs, pulsing synths and catastrophic drums echoed in the Ballroom. Yet when his magical high tenor hit eardrums like a wave, the crowd jumped with glee.

The electric frontman took hold when he engaged in some good old banter, especially when he told fans of an ugly break up which led into crowd favourite ‘The Street’.

It’s a real feat when a talented pianist can effortlessly play whilst engaging in the important chemistry needed between the frontman and the crowd. Bull exhibited that and more. He played crowd favourites ‘Dog’, ‘Nothing To Lose’, a scintillating solo vocal display with ‘Last Waltz’, his cover ‘Everybody Wants To Rule The World’ and his 2013 hits ‘Baby I Am Nobody Now’ and ‘Keep On Running’ rocked with reverberating synths and chaotic verses.

Bull professes he “could be one in a million baby, but I’m nobody now”, and that could not be further from the truth.

With his ability to mesmerise the crowd both musically, comedically and belt out powerful hits that leave the crowd on a high, Bull is a definite superstar on the live stage. It’s no wonder he has established himself as the most promising talent on the indie music scene today, his live show is not to be missed.
