The Warden will no longer be throwing parties in the county jail. That’s the word from prison officials in the UK this week as a leaked memo obtained by The Guardian reveals.

Prison management have deemed the licenses required to play recorded music in public areas too expensive and have decided to can jailhouse rock.

Ian Poree, an official with the National Offender Management Service has written to prison governors to remind them that they are bound by the 1988 copyright law to obtain a license to play music in public – i.e. outside the home. In a leaked internal memo he wrote: ‘In view of the high cost, the financial constraints on the service and the likely perception of spending large amounts of money on music for prisoners, the decision has been taken not to purchase a licence’. Damn, the man is always trying to kill rock n’ roll – even in the big house.
