Bands should be trying to get signed by advertising agencies rather than record companies. That’s the message Pharrell Williams had for young musicians at the MIDEM conference this week. Pharrell told attendees at the music industry cocaine and champagne knees up that musicians starting out today should be throwing their lot in with ad agencies instead.

His advice for starry eyed hopefuls starting out is: “I would probably build a site, a home for my music, a destination where people could come and see me and what I do and what I’m thinking about. And then I’d probably assemble a team of kids that would go and bug the hell out of advertising agencies and marketing companies to use my music.” He also added that he wasn’t opposed to file sharing, comparing it to taste testing in supermarkets:  “I think it’s cool that people test it out. I think that’s a good thing. How would you know what something tastes like if they didn’t allow you to test it?”

We’re expecting to see Pharrell in Woolworths hassling the lady with the samples for another bit of cheese on a biscuit.
