With so much new music floating around the interwebs, sometimes it’s hard to dig a little deeper and find out more about a promising artist.

That’s why The Profile is breaking it down for you. The Pitch takes care of the nitty gritty factual bits, The Plot serves as a Q & A with the artist, and The Plug is where you can go for more.

The Pitch

Gena Rose Bruce is a singer songwriter from Melbourne who dabbles in many genres. Her debut EP Wild One Babe, which will be launched this weekend has been recorded, thought about, argued over, liked, hated, loved, mixed and mastered and is now being placed in neat cardboard jackets ready for the masses!   Listen to ‘Jackson’ below.

Genre:
Alt-country-indie- pop

The Plot

Hometown:
“I grew up in a musical family in suburban Mitcham in Melbourne’s east. There is nothing exceptional there, and there is nothing really exceptional in what I do, so we are kind of a good match. I just go through the same experiences as most other people around here, so I just write songs that come from the sort of lives that most people that I know live. That’s my inspiration – and I’m always inspired.”

Influences:
“I have always listened to a lot of different types of music – pop, country, rock, RnB – so I am influenced by a lot. Somehow it all comes out in the mix in the sort of music that I write. So if you hear a bit of Nashville or grunge or some Disney movie in my songs, you may be right.”

Dream collaboration:
“To be in a band with Britney Spears, Lana del Rey, and Kurt Cobain. That would rock.”

Venue or Festival you’d love to play:
“I went to the Ryman Auditorium, the original Grand Ole Opry, in Nashville this year. It’s such a lovely venue with rows of wooden seats. I would love to play there!”

Favourite local act:
“The Weeping Willows and John Lingard are favourites of mine.”

Best gig you’ve ever been to:
Well, the Americana Awards at the Ryman this year was pretty damn good. To name a few of the line-up – Billy Bragg, Emmylou Harris, Stephen Stills, Duane Eddy, & heaps of others.

Favourite local:
The Evelyn Hotel. Great place for a launch!
