The Specials are to be awarded a new award by the NME at the upcoming Shockwaves NME Awards on 24th February. [Is that all these poncy Brit music journos do all day – sit around coming up with wanky award titles? – Hardworking Tone Deaf Ed.] The Two Tone legends will be bestowed The Teenage Cancer Trust Outstanding Contribution To Music Award at the shindig, which is to be held the O2 Academy Brixton in south London. They will also perform on the night, although no word as to whether Jerry Dammers, who wasn’t asked to be part of their recent reunion tour, will attend.

The band will also headline The Shockwaves NME Awards Big Gig as part of the Teenage Cancer Trust concerts on March 29 at the legendary same venue.

Now we know this is all for a good cause and would hate to be catty etc etc, but we did hear a little bird tell us via a bitchy gossip website that apparently the NME was struggling to find a big name to accept the award and had to settle for The Specials. Hmmm. Think of the sick kids okay!
