It was, understandably, Trent Reznor wishing the Grammy organisers a “heartfelt Fuck You” that made music headlines following the telecast of the 56th Annual Grammy Awards, but it’s actually an event that happened before the ceremony that’ll really grab music fans’ attention.

To help launch the new Beats Music streaming service, the Nine Inch Nails ringleader – along with co-founders Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine, and president Ian Rogers – helped christen their new project with a massive pre-Grammys launch party at the Belasco Theatre on 24th January that sounded like the greatest hip hop concert of all time.

The big push behind Beats Music, will launched stateside on Sunday 20th January, is its artist and music curation features, and to prove the point Reznor and co. put together a ‘Live Playlist’ for the Los Angeles launch party. Or in Reznor’s own words, “we made a best-of 90s hip-hop playlist and performed it live with all the artists!”

So who exactly made the ‘best-of 90s’ launch party performance? Well, start rubbing your eyes in disbelief as the final all-star bill reads like a who’s who of hip hop that’ll have hardcore fans rubbing their eyes in disbelief, as Variety reports. “We made a best-of 90s hip-hop playlist and performed it live with all the artists!”

Ice Cube opened proceedings, before passing the mic to the likes of Cypress Hill, members of the Pharcyde, Wu Tang luminaries Method Man & Red Man, and even Bon Thugs-N-Harmony. Meanwhile Teddy Riley and Blackstreet were on hand to perform ‘No Diggity’ (you know, that Chet Faker song?), while Ma$e and Diddy had a rare reunion to perform their collaboration, ‘It’s All About The Benjamins.’

Other hip hop heroes performing their signature hits included Nas, Busta Rhymes, and Beats Music co-founder Dr Dre, all to the backing of seven-piece band led by (former Will ‘Fresh Prince’ Smith associate) DJ Jazzy Jeff and Wild Style figurehead Fab 5 Freddy serving as the master of ceremonies.

Closing the hour-long live mash-up was Eminem, who delivered a medley of his biggest hits – including ‘My Name Is’ and ‘Lose Yourself’ – to the star-studded crowd of music A-listers.

Further increasing the levels of FOMO, the audience reportedly included a selection of musical superstars – such as Drake, Macklemore, Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker, and Pink – as well as Hollywood producer Brian Grazer and even Sir Paul McCartney (who knew the Beatle was a hip hop fan)!

“Pretty surreal watching thall all go down,” tweeted Reznor following the royal rap procession of the Beats ‘do, as well as posting the evening’s wish-fulfilling setlist:

Beats Music is putting the emphasis on curating music for its customers, from an advertised catalogue of 20 million songs, as being the key distinguishing factor from the overcrowded field of digital music platforms, including a number of partnerships with AT&T, Target, and offer extended trials to woo music users to the new music service.

Though it’s currently only available in the United States, but a report from Gizmodo indicates that Australia will become the second country in the world to get the new subscription-based platform, set to replace Telstra’s own Beats-associated platform, MOG, according to a statement from Ryan Kaveny, Telstra’s manager of Sport And Entertainment.
