The CherryRock 2014 lineup has been announced, with a very special headliner.

Topping the bill for CherryRock 2014 in AC/DC Lane this year will be none other than the Meat Puppets, playing their first show in Australia in over 20 years. Hitting up the eight edition of Cherry Bar’s street rock and roll festival in AC/DC Lane, kicking off on Sunday 25th May as 13 bands rock two stages (with no clashes) for nine and a half hours of music.

The Meat Puppets’ Kirkwood brothers – Curt and Cris – were made famous when just 138 days before his tragic death in 1993 Kurt Cobain invited them to perform with him on the infamous MTV Unplugged performance, where Nirvana covered three classic Meat Puppets songs: ‘Plateau’, ‘Oh Me’ and ‘Lake of Fire’.

Originally hailing from Phoenix, Arizona, Meat Puppets had a massive influence on not only Nirvana, but also inspiring guitar bands such as Pavement, Soundgarden and Dinosaur Jr. A noticeable part of the famed SST Records roster, Meat Puppets may have started as a punk rock group, but soon evolved into a unique sonic identity tall their own, mixing their spiky punk flavours with country and psychedelic rock, all punctuated by Curt Kirkwood’s distinctive vocals – and to this day their rare live shows are the stuff of legend.

Meat Puppets will be the star attraction for CherryRock 2014, but joining them on the CherryRock 2014 lineup is an impressive selection of bands. There’s the blues rock vigour of Chris Russell’s Chicken Walk, mighty Melbournites King Of The North, New Zealand’s roaring Beastwars, rising stars Drunk Mums, along with Child, Bitter Sweet Kicks, The Harlots, Don Fernando, and more to be announced in the coming weeks.

Reflecting on the state of Melbourne’s live music scene, which is yet to implement the coveted ‘Agent Of Change’ to protect CBD venues from noise complaining residents, Cherry Owner and Booker James Young notes: “The new residents of 108 Flinders Street move into their 189 apartments overlooking AC/DC Lane in the first week of June, so we wanted to host our biggest and best CherryRock street rock n roll party in the last week of May. As the Rolling Stones sing ‘This could be the last time, maybe the last time, I don’t know…”
