Elizabeth Rose’s bourgeoning success is imminent, not only on Sydney dance-floors, but Australia-wide. Roses’ shimmering vocals balance in perfect unity with her sugar-sweet melodies, producing smile-stretching electronica. It’s more than obvious this composer has a deep-seeded knowledge of sound, particular in terms of production.

Before Rose embarks on a national tour championed by latest single ‘Sensibility’, we picked the brain of the artist, asking for the tunes and tracks that have changed her life. Rose’s response is as vast as her musical range.

1. Aaliyah – ‘Try Again’

“Aaliyah’s self-titled album was one of the very first albums I bought as a young girl, I think I was 11 or 12? This particular song ‘Try Again’ stood out to me on the album. I just love the Timbaland production on it – the beat is so right and that melody melts me. It’s definitely still plays an influential part on my current songwriting.”

2. Coldcut – ‘Natural Rhythm’

“This track was off their 1997 album called Let’s Play and it’s a producer duo from The U.K. I found this CD in my older brother Samuel’s room at the ripe young age of seven and played it on his sound system in his room repeatedly as soon as I heard ‘Natural Rhythm’. ‘Timber’ is another amazing track off there too! This definitely sparked something in me – the intricate sampling and eclectic sounds cut up and used in it still excites me to this day…very cool stuff, such a cool tune.”

3. The Wiseguys – ‘Cowboy ‘78’

“My other older brother Anthony used to play The Wiseguys Antidote album on repeat on vinyl in his room and I used to go in there and dance to it too, being the annoying little sister I was. Again, the amazing samples are what attracted me to this song – I was about 10 I think when I first heard it and I still play it in my DJ sets here and there, reminds me of The Beastie Boys crossed with The Avalanches.”

4. Björk – ‘Who Is It?’

“Looooove Björk. This track was shown to me by a friend in high school when I was about 16 I think. I had never heard of Björk before that – so thank you, Franca, for sharing that amazing song with me. It’s where my obsession began with the Icelandic goddess – this song is off her 2004 album Medulla and the most exciting fact about that entire album is that every sound you hear has been created almost solely by human vocals/a capella and this song features beat boxing (from Rahzel)!”

5. Young Fathers – ‘Just Another Bullet’

“Just heard this track last night for the first time ever, and I actually cannot stop replaying it! Young Fathers are from The UK and to me their stuff sounds like a mix between Animal Collective, Kanye, and Gorillaz! I absolutely love the phrasing of the rapping on this track and the percussion and groove; their other song ‘Get Up’ is also amazing… I’m so excited to have come across it randomly last night whilst searching on Deezer!”
