Those Australian masters of the mashup, Yacht Club DJs, have released a brand new mixtape in their lead-up to next month’s East Coast tour.

The fifth and latest instalment in the Ballarat duo’s series of world-class exercises in culture jamming, the new release is suitably titled Oddity Number 5 and hit the interwebs earlier today.

Just like its predecessors, Oddity Number 5 is available totally free of charge as an online stream and download. If you’ve ever been at the centre of the Yacht Club DJs mashup maelstrom, you know what to expect, so jump straight to the link below to get your ears filled with the newest 60 minutes from Ballarat bandits Guy Chappell and Gaz Harrison.

If you’ve not been privy to the Yacht Club DJs experience by now (is that possible?), Oddity Number 5 further expands the twosome’s mixtape mantlepiece of – in order – KleptomaniaDemons of GymnasticsThey Mostly Come At Night and last year’s Find Me A Macchiato Pronto, which “literally has it all; from genre to era,” as our Tone Deaf reviewer enthused.

Beginning with the humming of Matthew McConaughey’s ‘money chant’ from The Wolf Of Wall Street, Oddity Number 5 doesn’t take long to hit its full stride, mixing the strangest of bedfellows from all walks of the musical kingdom to squeeze onto the one throne. …mixing the strangest of bedfellows from all walks of the musical kingdom to squeeze onto the one throne.

On first listen, some stand-out constellations include crossing Outkast’s ‘Ms. Jackson’ with John Cougar Mellencamp’s ‘Jack And Diane’, Fleetwood Mac meeting Daft Punk (Fleetwood Punk, anyone?), and a three-way splice of Danny Brown’s ‘Dip’, Arcade Fire’s ‘Reflektor’ and the theme from Captain Planet.

There’s also plenty of ‘oh, damn’ eureka moments involving countless more snatches and samples to enjoy, spanning from 60s RnB, 90s pop, rock, metal, and everything and anything in between.

In short, it’s – in Yacht Club DJs’ own words “a one-hour banger fest that’ll have you fanging for the weekend, stockpiling the party mixers and wondering what ever did happen to 90s buzz-babe Mya (not all that much).”

The latest Yacht Club musical odyssey is perfectly timed to coincide with the DJs’ forthcoming Australia tour; beginning up on the Gold Coast on Friday 11th April, the pair then showcase their high-energy live show as they snake along the East Coast, hitting Brisbane, Bryon Bay, Melbourne, Sydney, and what’s bound to be a heroic hometown show at Ballarat’s Karova Lounge.

The Australian tour and new mixtape follows Gaz and Guy’s trek through the UK and US last year where they were handpicked by Mumford & Sons to join them for their Gentlemen of the Road Stopovers after Yacht Club won their affections on the folkies 2012 Australian jaunt.

The duo are also working on their very first EP of original material, holing up at Red Door Studio with producer Woody Annison, whose credits include manning the desk for Dune Rats, Children Collide, and Hunting Grounds.

The as-yet-untitled EP is due for later in 2014 and will bring the hard-working twosome some extra revenue outside of their touring and the necessity of giving away their mixtapes for free to avoid legal wrangling.

“We’ve always been adamant to give our music away for free so I don’t feel like we are ripping anyone off,” explained Chappell in a 2012 Tone Deaf interview.

“Besides, to get a record label to clear all of our samples would be impossible because we tend to let our samples ride for a lot longer than the likes of Girl Talk. But Girl Talk is tied to the Creative Commons law in America, whereas Australia has not instituted as stringent copyright laws yet so we’re not as restrained.”
