Byron Bay metalcore band In Hearts Wake have surprised their dedicated following with a new change in musical direction.

Where the five-piece have built a reputation for brutal hardcore riffage, their newest track finds them taking a sharp u-turn towards Aussie hip hop in a tune extolling the benefits of healthy eating.

‘Brown Rice, Tuna and Salad’ was posted to the band’s Facebook earlier today, as FasterLouder reports, with a disclaimer from In Hearts Wake that reads: “This one is definitely a progression in our sound, so we hope you can all approach this track with an open mind.”

Along with its funky drum breaks, cowbells, and acoustic guitar, ‘B.R.T.S.’ also features guest verses from Troy Brady and Dan Brown of fellow hardcore Aussie favourites and UNFD label-mates, The Amity Affliction, offering their take on “a meal for real men.”

Aside from some disgruntled fans that didn’t pick up on the fact that the track was posted on April 1st, the response to the hip hop shift from In Hearts Wake fans on the band’s Facebook has been very positive.

Some lamented that the song would not feature on the band’s forthcoming sophomore album Earthwalker“If the rest of the album isnt[sic] like this, its all over,” posted one commenter, while another joked, “I’d want an album of just that song 12 times.”

Another perfectly captured the reception to ‘Brown Rice, Tuna and Salad’, well as the Live It Up festival, following the release of “real” new single ‘Divine’ lifted from the forthcoming new album. Earthwalker follows on from the Byron collective’s 2012 debut LP Divination and last year’s ‘Skydancer’ single, released to raise money for Indigenous charity organisations.

The release of Earthwalker will once again see the band giving back to the community. Teaming up with Carbon Neutral, each pre-ordered copy of In Hearts Wake’s new album sold through UNFD’s webstore 24 Hundred will see a bio-diverse native tree planted to contribute to Australia’s flora and fauna.
