UPDATE: Moshtix have released an official statement, and have told ticket holders that no financial details have been compromised.

Every year when festival tickets go on sale it’s a race for eager fans to get their hands on what is one of the hottest tickets in music, with ticket website regularly going into meltdown the second the clock strikes 9am.

But for fans trying to secure tickets for Splendour In The Grass this morning, a nightmare of an entirely different kind awaited them.

Social media lit up shortly after tickets went on sale with a number of patrons alarmed by exorbitant credit card fees being charged to their credit card. The fees appear to be linked to tickets being offered on the Moshtix website for 50% off, but with hidden fees that in some cases amounted to thousands of dollars.

Splendour In The Grass have reached out to disgruntled punters on Facebook and Twitter, urging people not to purchase tickets advertised as 50% as they will not the valid.

But if the discount tickets aren’t valid, that begs the question as to their source. According to those who had purchased the tickets, a link to the tickets appeared on the official Moshtix website shortly after tickets went on sale.

So far, Moshtix have remained tight-lipped as to the cause but have confirmed with The Music that they are looking into the issue. Fans who have purchased the discount tickets, or been charged exhorbidant credit card fees are urged to log complaints with Moshtix’s ticket support service.

It appears that the suspect fees are only linked to the discount tickets, and those who purchased the tickets at full price have been unaffected.

Moshtix took down the Splendour page temporarily as they worked on a fix, and ticket sales appear to be back up and running smoothly. But fans are worried that this might be much worse than a simple technical glitch.

Screenshots of the Moshtix website have been posted online that appear to show links on the Splendour In The Grass ticketing page that link to hacking websites.

“Buy MOSHTIX data lists” the suspect passage read, with a link offering to sell the data of those who bought tickets through notorious hacker website Silk Road.

The link to Silk Road raises the possibility that the 50% off tickets were a ruse by hackers to take financial data from those looking to purchases tickets for the festival, and charging huge fees on their credit cards in the process.

At this stage, Moshtix CEO Harley Evans has not ruled out a hacking attack, however at this stage nothing official has been confirmed.

The Splendour In The Grass ticketing page is now back online, and shows all tickets expect for camping passes and Sunday passes as being exhausted.
