You might fondly recall the 90s alt-rock boom as a haze of flannelette, shirtless rockers, and post-Nirvana/Alanis Morisette also-rans. Well, this new video may do little to change that opinion but it’ll certainly give you a serious injection of the warm and fuzzies.

Compiled by the folks at CBC Music.CA, the ’90s Alt-Rock Vocal Hook Supercut gathers together a collection of the decade’s most distinctive ‘oohs’, ‘aaahs’, ‘hey-yeahs’, and ‘doot-doot-doots’ into one two-and-a-half minute blast of trademark musical tics.

There’s vocal appearances from some of the 90s’ more familiar names (Pearl Jam, Blur, The Cranberries, The Breeders, Beck), some you might’ve forgotten about (4 Non Blondes, James, Spacehog), and – of course – a trademark nonsense rap from Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Anthony Kiedis. But for the best fun, try playing it in the background and see how many of the 39 songs you can identify without resorting to the visuals – don’t worry the full list is revealed at the end of the clip for your cross-referencing pleasure.

The supercut obviously serves as a great trip down memory lane (bookmark it for the next time you need a quick dose of nostalgia porn), but it doubly serves to show that while 90s vocal hooks were a unifying hallmark, the supercut also shows how stylistically diverse the alt-rock boom was in practice.

If 39 songs from the 90s in 2-ish minutes still isn’t enough nostalgia for you, then try 60 songs from the 90s in 6 minutes. (Full disclosure: you might recognise the name on that latter mashup…)
