If you’re a massive music fan, chances are you’ve dreamed about breaking into the music industry. Throwing away the shackles of your 9-5 to follow the path of the rock star may be the most obvious route to getting your foot into the world of music, but it’s not necessarily the most consistently successful (or secure) but we’re here to help.

Believe it or not, some of the biggest names of the Australian music industry have left quite a few doors ajar that are just waiting for the right kind of passionate music lover to burst they way through them. Taking the tedium out of scrolling through endless Seek.com.au listings and the pain of sussing out dodgy looking job advertisements, we’ve put together a handful of great opportunities that could lead you straight into doing what you love for a living.

So dust off your CV, get creative, and take a peek at what could be your new music-shaped future below. Good luck.

Artist Voice Administration Coordinator

Being one of Australia’s fastest growing artist agencies – with acts like Chet Faker, Jagwar Ma, The Temper Trap, Bliss N Eso, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and more on the books – means needing someone who’s super-organised to get all those music stars what they need. Artist Voice, established by Mushroom’s Matt Gudinski and former Premier Harbour Agency Brett Murrihy, are looking for an Administration Coordinator to do just that, specifically for dealing with the “coordination of key business information, contracts and some management liaison.”

Applications close Friday 16th May, 2014. Check out more info here.

Universal Music Australia Assistant

One of the ‘Big Three’, record label major Universal Music Group has got a few music names you might find familiar (U2, Eminem, or The Presets ring any bells?), and the Australian arm of the company has put the call out for an “Assistant to support two of our Executive Managers.” That means you’ll be dealing directly with UMA top brass as you provide “personal assistance and support HR.” You’ll need a background in sales and commercial admin to be eligible, but if you’ve ticked that box, you could be well on your way.

MusicNSW Operations Manager

One of (if not) the most important music organisations in New South Wales has a position vacant for a permanent part-time Operations Manager. Offering a pro-rata salary and flexibility (at 3 days/22.5hrs a week negotiable), the successful applicant will work alongside MusicNSW Executive Officer Kirsty Brown in ensuring the growth and expansion of contemporary music in the State’s industry and culture. From day to day, that involves helping “the development and implementation of organisational strategies, policies and practices – including budgeting, project management and effective financial administration,” and the bigger picture parts of the role mean directly helping Australia’s music scene blossom.

Melbourne Band Booker

Fitzroy music favourite Laundry, located in Johnson Street, is seeking a Bands Booker who’s got their pulse on the live music scene with a contacts list and live music know-how to match. You’ll basically be ensuring that the venue has all the music and entertainment that keeps the punters coming back for more. One for the multi-tasking creative types with great communication skills, Laundry’s new booker will be “hired in an ongoing capacity in our bookings office on Brunswick Street,” so you know your breaks are going to be spoiled for eating options.

Destroy All Lines Event Manager

If you haven’t been to an even that was hosted by Destroy All Lines, there’s a very high probability you’ve heard someone raving about one. As well as presenting ace alternative club nights all over the country, they also regularly tour bands (they’re behind Anberlin’s upcoming farewell tour, for instance) and now Destroy All Lines is looking for another full time addition to their NSW events team. Imagination will get you a long way here, the more creative the promotion and innovative the content – the better. Of course management and budgeting skills and relationships with venues will give you a major edge too.

Positive Feedback Music Publicist

Dealing creatively with artists and their publicity campaigns is the specialty of Sydney-based boutique PR agency, Positive Feedback, who work with some of Australia’s most exciting emerging talent and clients such as SAFIA, Alison Wonderland, I Know Leopard. Most excitingly, they also handle PR for Perth’s Spinning Top Music – the home to Tame Impala, Pond, and new side-project GUM. This role (full-time or contract, under negotiation) might also mean you get to dip your toe into comedy, theatre, and other arts publicity. Be quick though, there’s only a few days left to apply.
