Most punters will be aware of Dune Rats for their outrageously awesome viral video for their ‘Red Light, Green Light’ track. In the video, they suck down around 30 cones between the two of them, in roughly two minutes, an Olympic feat if there ever was one.

But to focus on this impressive achievement alone would be ignorant of the amazing garage/surf music that these guys are pumping out. With a new member Brett on bass, and with three EP’s drumming up considerable praise for the band, their long-awaited debut record has surfaced with bong-shatteringly good results.

For those looking for something deep and meaningful, perhaps a new lease on life, or the answers to the universe, this album is not for you. The shouted outro of ‘MARAJUINA!’ in the opening track ‘Dalai Lama’ makes it pretty clear that this is a party record, best enjoyed as a ruckus-inducer.

Dune Rats runs through incredibly fast, sprinting through track after track with fantastic ecstasy. These songs are purpose built for rocking out, making out, and throwing up to. Tracks like ‘Funny Guy’ and ‘Superman’ and sci-fi ode ‘ET’ provide more enthusiasm than a pothead interning at a dispensary.

There are some moments of clarity, like ‘Heart’, ‘Home Sick’ and ‘Lola’, which all ring with a sweetness and show a bit more to the group than a party-hard persona. But in all honesty, Dune Rats are best enjoyed here when they’re going HAM.As their track ‘DR DR’ puts it, ‘…it’s fun to be a punk sometimes.’
