If you thought Karnivool’s transformative take on London Grammar was interesting. Wait until you see what the Perth band’s fellow Aussie prog-rock tour-mates Dead Letter Circus did with Rage Against The Machine.

Visiting Triple J Breakfast this morning, the five-piece took the brave step of covering the Rage classic ‘Killing In The Name’… unplugged.

Following treating listeners and hosts Alex Dyson and Matt Okine to an acoustic take on ‘I Am’, from their second album The Catalyst Fire, the five-piece made the most of their Like A Version debut with a totally re-tooled version of Rage Against The Machine’s signature tune.

Replacing the propulsive riffs with haunting guitar work and drum pads (inspired by Massive Attack), frontman Kim Benzie turned Zach De La Rocha’s political howls into yearning melodies and in turn, takes the “Fuck You” breakdown and the tune as a whole in an entirely new direction.

The acoustic Rage Against The Machine cover came about following a conversation between The Butterfly Effect guitarist Kurt Goedhart and Benzie, as the singer explains to the radio hosts in the video performance, and also ties in with the announcement that Dead Letter Circus are playing a three-date tour of intimate unplugged shows.

Currently playing around the country in full prog rock flight, the five-piece will perform in acoustic mode – stripping back the dense sonic layers of their music – for gigs in Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne. Tickets are on sale now, full details below.
