It’s been four years since Caribou’s avant-genius opus, Swim, a scintillating record that still stands out as one of the best of the electronic genre of the past decade. However, yesterday, the man behind the production, Dan Smith, finally announced Caribou’s return in the shape of a new album entitled Our Love due out for release in October, and was even so kind as to couple the announcement with a tantalising taste-test single.

‘Can’t Do Without You’ is a slow-burning four-minute anthem so large it feels as heavy as a track four-times its duration. It pulls you straight back into Caribou’s graviton of dense, sprawling production, starting off sparse before multiplying in size to eventually take the form of the kind of mind-numbing, cathartic dancefloor cut you crave when the sun has risen and the house party has dwindled down to its final survivors.

It lands close to ‘Odessa’ in terms of its accessibility, with the earworm anti-Auto-Tune hook almost sounding like it’d fit it on a Top 40 EDM banger by Calvin Harris et al.

A press release claims the upcoming Our Love is Caribou’s “most soulful record to date”, and the sense-tingling ‘Can’t Do Without You’ certainly takes steps in that direction.

Welcome back, Caribou. Four years was far too long.

Our Love is out Oct 4th in Germany and Oct 6th in the UK/EU via City Slang, and Oct 7th in Canada and US through Merge.
