Kimbra’s star-studded second album, The Golden Echo, has already got us pretty excited, chiefly thanks to its all-star list of collaborators but also thanks to deliciously chaotic lead single ’90s Music’. ‘

Now the New Zealand singer-songwriter has dropped two new full-length cuts from the album, along with finalising the artwork, tracklisting, and release date (that’ll be 19th August via Warner Brothers) as pre-orders go live.

The first of the new joints is the slinky up-beat funk of ‘Nobody But You’, starring the Kiwi’s characteristic vocal layers in a striking mix of growling synths and rich back-end. There’s also a fascinating little piano end-piece that hints how sonic segues will play a big part in linking the 12 tracks of Kimbra’s new set.

Meanwhile, ‘Love In High Places’ is a deeper album cut, building slowly from Kimbra’s lush, soulful vocal performance against an airy but insistent rhythmic track and pillowing harmonics. You can also hear the distinctive bass-playing of Thundercat, whose fancy fretwork and fingerprints are all over the song (especially in the runs in the coda) as well as The Golden Echo as a whole.

“Once I had him play on one song, I was like ‘man, we need you as a colour on everything!’ Kimbra told Tone Deaf in a recent interview about her new album.
