With so much new music floating around the interwebs, sometimes it’s hard to dig a little deeper and find out more about a promising artist.
That’s why The Profile is breaking it down for you. The Pitch takes care of the nitty gritty factual bits, The Plot serves as a Q & A with the artist, and The Plug is where you can go for more.

The Pitch

Princes of electronic-pop with a nu-soul bent, Canberra-based overachievers, SAFIA have kicked off 2014 in style. Being awarded the support of Kiwi queen bee, Lorde on her impending national tour, the trio are also revelling in the success of their latest single, ‘Paranoia, Ghosts & Other Sounds’.

In case that wasn’t enough to write home about, SAFIA have been bringing their lauded live show to a venue near you, on their string of headline dates across the country which has seen them tearing up the nation this May/June.

The Plot

Hometown: “We all hail from the nations capital, Canberra. Growing up in Canberra we didn’t have the luxury of a live music scene like Melbourne or Sydney (Although it must be said that Canberra’s music scene is growing rapidly).

With not a lot to do as a young kid in Canberra a lot of our time was spent hanging with friends and playing music. We’ve been playing music together since we were twelve and we’re still doing it to this day.”

Influences: “Our influences in music are extremely broad, ranging from The Beatles to Skrillex, Foo Fighters to James Blake, Nina Simone to Bon Iver. If music is good and touches us regardless of style, genre, hipster cred and commercial appeal then we’ll be influenced by it.

TV shows like Mighty Boosh & Flight of the concords also play their role in influencing us. And we are always susceptible to a good movie soundtrack/score. Lord of The Rings, The Social Network and Jurassic Park are a few that come to mind.”

First song you ever wrote: “We’ve been writing music together for nearly 10 years now so I cant even remember what the first song we wrote was. Although, I do remember the first electronic composition we did together. It was called David Attenborough and featured a snippet of Sir David saying the words ‘quite extraordinary’ just before the ‘drop’.”

Favourite local act:
“Favourite Aussie act at the moment would have to be The Kite String Tangle, aka Danny who is an all round legend who most importantly is a super talented musician who can write good songs as well as being an incredible producer. He’s got some gems in the bag so cant wait for him to unleash them on the world.”

Favourite local venue: “Favourite local venue at the moment would have to be The Oxford Art Factory in Sydney. Although the sound isn’t always the best in the country, the vibe there is always awesome.”

Dream collaboration/s: “My dream collaboration would have to be Mr Dave Grohl.”

Dream rider: “Brodburger” (Canberra people will get this)

Best gig you’ve ever been to: “The best gig I’ve ever been to would have to be Coldplay at ANZ Stadium. No matter what people say about them, you cant deny that they are incredible musicians & song writers & they really know how to put on a spectacle.”

Venue Or Festival you’d love to play: “It would be a dream come true to play a festival like Coachella or Glastonbury.”
