What They Sound Like? Spookyland is the cacophonous creation of star-crossed Sydney dweller, Marcus Gordon. This debut studio single titled ‘Silly Fucking Thing’ introduces us to a stunning voice (aurally) that’s been called ‘grating’ and compared to Bob Dylan and Joanna Newsom.
Gordon’s voice (metaphorically) is just as moving, with an incredible ability for story telling, akin to Bob Dylan paired with the volatility of Nick Cave. Spookyland are bringing (straight up purist) folk back into the limelight.
Why You Should Care? There’s an EP, due out later this year through Monday Records which promises to ‘traverses genres’ and is filled with a dark blues blend with country whilst an underlying textured pop sensibility keeps these earworms wriggling around long after you’ve pulled out your headphones. Titled Rock and Roll Weakling, the EP was recorded with and produced by the revered Tony Buchen (Andy Bull, Megan Washington, Tim Finn).
