The Listen Out 2014 lineup has been announced, as festival organisers confirm the list of local and international artists that will be playing the second edition of the Australian boutique dance music festival.
Following on from locking in the Listen Out 2014 dates and venues earlier this month and teasing a “killer hand-picked lineup”, festival promoters Fuzzy – who are also behind Field Day, Shore Thing, and Harbourlife – have revealed an eclectic bill that matches their “philosophy of best, not biggest” for the event; taking place in Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, and Brisbane this September and October.
Headlining the Listen Out 2014 lineup is none other than multi-award vacuuming Sydney producer Flume. Joining Australia’s most streamed artist on the bill is Harley Streten’s musical mate and collaborator, Chet Faker, the Melbourne chilltronica star who’s currently on a massive national tour in support of his long-awaited (and ARIA-topping) debut album, Built On Glass.
Topping the international contingent on the Listen Out 2014 lineup is enigmatic dance producer Zhu (whose breakout single ‘Faded’ was used to soundtrack the Listen Out teaser video), as well as downtempo pioneer Four Tet, fellow London sonic crafter Shlohmo, as well as electronic duo Bondax and a DJ Set from Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosuars – both also making the trip from the UK. “We want to hold on to what was good about last year, and make it better.”
Hip hop fans will be excited by the appearance of Los Angeles MC (and recent Aussie visitor) Schoolboy Q, Californian rapper YG, alternative Scottish hip hop trio Young Fathers, and Australia’s own young Adelaide dynamo Tkay Maidza. Rounding out the Listen Out 2014 lineup is masked producer Golden Features, and buzzing Aussie producers Yahtzel and Perth’s Ta-ku (both noted favourites of headliner Flume).
Fuzzy promises more artists to join the lineup, including the to-be-announced Triple J Unearthed winner, in future weeks while Director John Wall promises “we want to hold on to what was good about last year, and make it better.” That includes “tweaking the venues” to ensure more space for punters, “easier bar access, quicker entry, and louder sound wherever possible,” says Wall.
“We were very happy with Listen Out’s first edition last year. We got great crowds and everyone knew exactly why they were there. It looked, sounded and felt like the alternative to complicated festivals it was intended to be: Instead of trying to please everyone a little bit, pleasing a smaller bunch of people the whole time.”

First launched last year as a replacement to the retired Parklife Festival, Listen Out 2013 featured Disclosure, AlunGeorge, TNGHT, John Talabot, RÜFÜS, and Azealia Banks, who caused quite a bit of controversy after she cut her Sydney set only 15 minutes in, due to crowd members tossing projectiles on stage. The Brooklyn rapper then abandoned her Melbourne set even quicker due to more rogue projectiles aimed her way.
Despite the negative attention, Listen Out 2013 found great success with ticket-holders and our own Perth Tone Deaf reviewer, who hailed Listen Out’s debut as “the first jewel in [the festival] season’s crown.”
