With just over a month until Australia’s biggest winter music festival kicks off, the organisers of the completely sold out event have a few more surprises up their sleeve.

Namely, some new additions to the already 100+ strong Splendour In The Grass 2014 lineup and a chance to see a selection of the festival’s must-see bands in a special mini-festival.

To get festival-goers in the Splendour mood, and “because three days of arts and music is never enough,” promoters have announced the official Splendour In The Grass Pre-Party, taking place the night before the festival kicks off – on Thursday 24th July at The Northern in Byron Bay – with a lineup featuring seven artists billed for the event.

Headlining will be New York post-punks Interpol – whose Splendour appearance is the band’s only Australian show. They’ll be joined by fellow internationals: indie favourites Future Islands and dance instigators Buraka Som Sistema (another Splendour exclusive).

Rounding out the pre-party lineup are Aussie  artists Art Vs Science, performing a DJ set, 2014’s most hyped band DMA’s, young rapping gun Tkay Maidza, and Sydney sonic adventurers Fishing.

Tickets for the Splendour In The Grass 2014 Pre-Party are strictly limited, with only “a few hundred” going on sale next Thursday 26th June, while a special members’ pre-sale will get access the day before. Full details at bottom.

Along with the party invitation, three new artists are joining the already huge Splendour In The Grass 2014 lineup, as the winners of the Triple J Unearthed competition are announced: Namely, Brisbane electro songbird Airling will be now be jetting to the Yelgun Parklands site next month, along with local Byron Bay five-piece Tora.

“Something amazing has happened,” wrote Airling vocalist Hannah Shepherd on the group’s official Facebook page following winning the Unearthed competition; “Thanks to the babes at triple j and triple j Unearthed … wow, my heart feels like it’s exploding xx”

Airling have just two (very fine) singles to their name, produced by Tom Iansek (of Big Scary/#1 Dads), and following opening for James Vincent McMorrow on his Aussie tour last month, they’ll now be playing support for The Paper Kites and Iceland’s Asgeir on his Splendour sideshows in the coming weeks.

Another late addition to the Splendour bill is masked producer Golden Features, who was added to the Byron festival late last week and has already announced a return to Australia in September as part of the Listen Out 2014 lineup.

Speaking of features, the details of Splendour’s arts and crafts component – Splendour In The Craft – have also been confirmed, featuring Fancy Free (the ‘crafternoon’ side-project of The Grates’ Patience Hogdson) and others showing festival-goers how to make “Piñata Boom Boxes, Cool As F#%k Guitar Pick Charm Bracelets, Scissors Paper Rock-n-roll fanzines” and other arty delights. Along with Tone Deaf’s own picks for the 17 must-see Splendour acts, the lineup recently got an additional boost thanks to the announcement that the Red Bull Music Academy Stage would be returning this year.
