Not content with earning the world title for the Fastest Record Ever, Jack White has just set a new vinyl sales record with the release of the ice-cream flavour-inspiring musician’s new solo album, Lazaretto.

The first week album sales are in of the Third Man Records boss’s latest album, released 10th June, and as well as landing White with his second solo #1 debut atop the US Charts, the vinyl sales of Lazaretto alone have broken a 20 year old record, marking the biggest first-week vinyl sales since Nielsen Soundscan began tracking sales data in 1991.

Over 40,000 copies of the world’s first ‘Ultra LP’ were sold in the US, breaking the previous record set by Pearl Jam for 1994’s Vitalogy, which shifted 34,000 vinyl LPS in its debut sales week, as Billboard informs. To further contextualise the enormous sense of scale, White’s opening sales haven more than doubled Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories – one of 2013’s highest selling vinyl releases – which shifted 19,000 LPs in its first week. “[This] proves there is an appetite for physical formats, especially for artists who go the extra mile…”

The 40k vinyl copies of Lazaretto accounts for nearly a third of all sales of the album, selling 138,00o units total, according to trackers Nielsen SoundScan, proof that the ongoing vinyl revival shows no signs of faltering. James Donio, the President of the Music Business Association, says the huge opening sales figures “proves there is an appetite for physical formats, especially for artists who go the extra mile to offer something truly unique.”

That’s exactly what White did with the invention of his gimmick-laden Ultra LP, the 12” version of Lazaretto that comes tricked out with hidden tracks, hologram technology, dual grooves, different matte finishes, and other neat vinyl-only features. (But is the album any good? Well, our ‘Hit or Shit?’ feature review should answer that.)

Closer to home, Australian sales saw Lazaretto debuting at #3 on the ARIA Albums Chart this week, following an almost inescapable marketing buildup that included world record attempts, mixing it up with Neil Young, discussing the break-up of The White Stripes, and penning a heartfelt public apology to all the musicians he’s mouthed off about in the press of late (including Lana Del Rey, Black Keys, Adele etc).

Aussie fans in Melbourne and Sydney are also being offered the chance to taste Jack White ice-cream this week, thanks to Gelato Messina’s limited edition Jack N’ White flavour.

Maybe a tub of the Jack Daniels and white chocolate flavoured ice-cream will lure the prolific musician back Down Under. White is currently touring Lazaretto through Europe and the US with a number of festival appearances, including Glastonbury 2014 next week, playing the Pyramid Stage on Saturday night ahead of controversial headliners Metallica.

Last weekend, he delivered an epic career-spanning, 26-song setlist at Bonnarroo, and some enterprising users on reddit have shared a high-quality soundboard audio version of the two-and-a-half performance, as Consequence Of Sound reports. You can download the whole set – drawing from White Stripes, Raconteurs, Dead Weather, and solo material – in full here.
