Coldplay had a special treat for Sydney fans at their sold out ‘intimate’ Enmore Theatre show last night: a surprise appearance from Kylie Minogue.

Following the conclusion of the British group’s 16-song setlist in their first visit Down Under since the 2012 Mylo Xyloto tour, Chris Martin introduced “Australia’s Queen” to join the group on-stage, after joking “who would we like to be our coach on [The Voice]?”, before launching into a closing encore.

The pint-sized pop-star then appeared and joined Martin at an upright piano to the scream of 2,400 screaming fans, launching into a cover version of the classic Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue duet, ‘Where The Wild Roses Grow’ – with Martin filling in for the Gothic prince of Australian rock, as can be seen in the fan footage below.

Cave rarely plays the 1996 murder ballad without Minogue, the pair last performing it live on stage together at London’s KOKO for a Bad Seeds concert in 2013  – the first time they’d performed since 1998 (though a new recording of the hit did feature on Minogue’s The Abbey Road Sessions album of 2012).

Coldplay also performed a version of Minogue’s super-hit ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head’ at last night’s Enmore concert before finishing the night with ‘Fix You’.

The Kylie cameo is the second major surprise that Coldplay fans had for Sydney fans this week after they filmed a guerilla music video, marching through the streets of Newtown with 250 residents as extras.

The video, for the band’s newest single ‘A Sky Full Of Stars’, depicts Martin and his bandmates as colourful kitted-out buskers leading a crowd of fans through the streets, performing in front of local Newtown arts and music venue, The Hub as star-shaped confetti rains down upon their public audience.

“Thank you Sydney, that was amazing. And here’s the new ‘A Sky Full Of Stars’ video that you made with us,” write the band of the new clip – which you can view at bottom.

Last night’s one-off Enmore Theatre concert (which sold out in less than three minutes after going on sale last month) concludes Coldplay’s short Australian tour, which included filming a private TV show performance for the Max Sessions on Wednesday night.

It’s the band’s first Australian visit since their 2012 Mylo Xyloto tour, promoting the release of their latest album Ghost Stories; “the closest the four-piece have come to a Chris Martin solo album… and a Chris Martin break-up solo album, at that,” as our Tone Deaf reviewer wrote in our ‘Hit or Shit?’ feature review.
