When The Vines announced that they’d be releasing their first new album since 2011’s Future Primitive this September (and a double album at that), it could have been dismissed as pure gusto; what with the self-hyping trailer and all.

Now that we have the second full-length song from the 22-track Wicked Nature however, ‘Metal Zone’, it looks more likely that the troubled Aussie rock band’s first ever independent release is going to be quite the comeback album.

Shared today via a simple-but-trippy music video, ‘Metal Zone’ is our first look at the new Vines trio – Craig Nicholls and fresh-faced members Lachlan West (Something With Numbers) and Tim John (The Griswolds) – in action.

After a sinister prologue of abstract cooing and snaking guitar, a straight-edged riff drives the track into a muscular mosh-ready tempo of shout-along pleasures as Nicholls sneers menacingly, “I’m not going insane/I just need more fun.”

‘Metal Zone’, along with the similarly no-nonsense ‘Out The Loop‘, makes up for just 3:47 minutes of the new album we’ve collectively heard – and if you pre-order Wicked Nature from PledgeMusic you get instant access to another three tracks. But combined, it’s actually got us pretty excited about The Vines again – something we never thought we’d declare a few years ago.
