What is there left to say about Aussie music ambassador Courtney Barnett that hasn’t already been trumpeted by a dozen patriotic Australian publications? Well, now there’s some new glowing words to be directed at the Melbourne singer-songwriter – freshly returning home from slaying it at Glastonbury – as she’s dropped a brand new track.

Kicking off with a throwaway false start, ‘Pickles From The Jar’ is basically a bedroom punk re-write of ‘Let’s Call The Whole Thing Off’, as Ms. Barnett’s trademark laconic delivery quizzes the pronunciation of dance (hard ‘a’ like the yanks) and dance (soft ‘a’ like the poms), and the essential differences: “we couldn’t be more contrary if we tried/all chalk and cheese…” as the refrain goes.

It’s a fun little tune, but what’s more significant about ‘Pickles From The Jar’ is that it’s the lead from the new compilation from Barnett’s own Milk! Records label.

The new 10” vinyl release, available for pre-order via a new Pozible campaign, features the full Milk! roster, including Fraser A. Gorman, Jen Cloher, The Finks, and Royston Vasie – all recorded at Headgap studios in Preston with engineer Burke Reid (ex-Gerling man who’s desk jockeyed for The Drones, DZ Deathrays, and Barnett’s own forthcoming full-length debut album).

To launch the new Milk! Records 10” compilation, the full label all-stars will be playing the Northcote Social Club on Sunday 31st August from 2pm. Tickets available online here.
