A name that’s floated around for quite a while is that of indie pop sensation Sky Ferreira. Her debut record Night Time, My Time has seen the LA-based starlet globe trot from country to country, dipping her toes in just about every festival along the way.

Now, hitting Australian shores for Splendour in the Grass, Ferreira prepared herself with a warm up show – leaving a lasting impression at Melbourne’s Prince Bandroom.

The crowd present this eve was confusing yet interesting, showing how wide of an audience Ferreira holds. From those fresh-faced teens straight out of high school to conglomerates of dads just out for a good time, it seemed like everyone wanted to catch a glimpse of the rising star.

A lot of hype has surrounded Ferreira, and it was either ‘make-or-break’to see if she could deliver the songs on stage as well as she did in the studio.

Kicking off the night was Brisbane artist Eves, who was an amiable support. Combining what sounded like elements of country pop ballads with strong electronics was captivating, successfully holding the audience’s attention for the duration of her set.

The crowd grew restless waiting for the main act, people frequently peeling their shoes from the sticky floor beneath them. As soon as the 22 year old graced the stage, smartphones emerged left, right and centre in a flurry to capture the moment.

Opening with ’24 Hours’, it was difficult to hear her as she was lost amongst the overpowering electronics, samples and strong bassline. But it all levelled out once Ferreira and her posse delved into ‘Boys’, sending the crowd wild.

The petite singer seemingly breezed her way through the substantial set, which comprised mainly of material from her LP.

There was no holding back in the dynamic ‘I Will’, and ‘Heavy Metal Heart’ was given quite a heavy rendition. Rowdy catcalling in-between songs by young girls frustrated audience members, but Ferreira seemed too kind-natured to ignore them and a significant amount of time was spent responding to them.

At one stage Ferreira became very confused and awkward, resulting in the restart of what was sounding like a perfect rendition of ‘Omanko’ due to lack of feedback through speakers on stage.

Ending with crowd favourite and early EP hit ‘Everything is Embarrassing’, Ferreira effectively showed the power she holds over such an audience – and the way she worked the stage despite the jet lag is to be commended.

It’s clear that the fan base for the singer is growing rapidly and after her Australian visit, you can only expect it to blossom – with no surprises here if Sky Ferreira is a household name by next year.
