Loving live music isn’t just about attending music festivals and seeing an international artist’s massive arena show. Even the biggest of big-name headliners started in the trenches, on the sticky carpets and bandrooms of your local bars and pubs – which is exactly where you should be if you want to discover your new favourite band or venue. Here’s our picks for this week’s best local gigs from Aussie talent – from Perth to the East Coast – and all for the price of a good meal.

Mojo Juju

Why? The weekend has arrived and so too has the final month of winter, so you need to be out celebrating, right? Guess what? This bad-boy – wait, bad-girl, is completely free. Mojo Juju, known as the “wise-crackin, sass-mouthin, jump-jivin attitude wrapped up in a zoot suit” is taking her indescribable jazz and blues swag to The Espy this Friday night; we suggest you check ‘Must Be Desire’ as a bit of a taste-taste. To make things even better, Mojo Juju will be supported by Kira Puru, Lachy Doley, Dale Winters and Benjalu.

Smooch Records Release Party: SMILE, Rat & Co and Mouth Tooth

Where? The Toff In Town, 2/252 Swanston St, Melbourne CBD

(Who really does any work on Fridays anyway?) The event is headlined by the gorgeously melodic slack rockers SMILE, responsible for the psych-laden soother ‘Born Again.’ The buck doesn’t stop there, with “Melbourne’s best kept secret” (alright, it’s no secret anymore) Rat & Co and their ambient electronica arrangements, plus the hypnotic dream-pop Mouth Tooth. It’s rare to see this amount of local talent squeeze into one venue, let alone for a scant $10. Melbournites, there isn’t anywhere else you can afford to be this Thursday night.
