Five piece Melbourne band Mercians are about to release their latest EP titled Your Words,  a fusion of post-rock, uplifting grooves blended with husky, soulful vocals.

Starting out several years ago as a quartet, four became five in 2012 as Jerome Green took over lead vocals which spurred an overhaul of the band’s sound. Drawing influences from bands like The Maccabees, The Neighbourhood, Radiohead and Foals the band came together to create an EP with a focus on producing more complex song structures.

In support of Your Words the guys are about to embark on their first ever national tour, and to celebrate they’ve given us a track by track run down on this stunning new EP.

Coastlines

“This opening track is a gentle tease. Moving you in and out of a dream-like haze, you’re taken to a not too dissimilar state of real-life dreaming: so close, yet so far. It plays on the unsatisfied, the hungry and the ‘please sir, can I have some more?’ The ambient sounds wash over you like waves on rock. It traces the beauty of the physical form and every bit of calm and storm that colours the lines. As the song builds to a it’s peak, you are not left wanting, you are left needing.”

The Island

“There are many reasons why I am so very fond of our first single. Both the narrative and the instrumental blow the lid off the EP. It expresses energy louder and larger than any of the five tracks. Written about a period of time spent in Manhattan, a kind of rebirth occurred. All fear and hesitation linked to pursuing music were expelled. We constantly find and lose ourselves. In Manhattan, I was found.”

Your Words

“Originally an acoustic track that was gathering dust, we used the simple chords to send a simple message: Talk ain’t cheap. Never underestimate how words can connect and affect. Complementing this theme is the very catchy chorus “All your words said, shake me on the inside”. The hypnotic chant lined the skeleton of the song, coupled with meaty hooks that build to a steady and soaring climax. It ends as it starts: simple chords sending a simple message.”

Questions

“With elements of hip-hop and post-rock , we were very much finding ourselves when this was made. The first song we ever wrote, it has a ‘dirt in your nails’ feel to it. Do you seek the embrace of one or many? They both have a role to play. Pose your own questions.”

Stardust

“Atmospheric and celestial, this track concludes our first EP. It is filled with melodic guitar hooks, funky drums and soulful vocals. This song is the EP’s barometer. It takes elements of every offering and cohesively blends them into a high-energy ditty that teases you just like coastlines, only you are no longer in a dream state. Courtesy of the cumulative impact of this track and the three which precede it, the haze evident in Coastlines is now burnt away.”
