This Friday the 15th of August marks the first day of Melbourne community radio station Triple R (3RRR)’s 2014 Radiothon.

Since being founded in 1976 Triple R have always been champions and pioneers of discovering and sharing new talent nation wide. An integral element of the Australian music scene, their annual membership subscription drive is the ideal time to support the independent and volunteer based station to ensure it stays on air for another year.

The theme for this year’s Radiothon is Local and Vocal – Subscribe And Be Heard so we asked a number of presenters to pick their favourite Aussie tracks and acts of 2014.

Triple R Radiothon runs from 15th-24th August, for more info and to become a Triple R member, visit www.rrr.org.au.

Jacinta Parsons – Breakfasters

On Air: Monday-Friday 6-9am
Milwaukee Banks – ‘Sweater Made of Gold’: The Melbourne duo, consisting of producer Edo (Adrian Rafter) and Dyl Thomas of Polo Club is is being described as future rap. If this is the future – I want in!

Richard In Your Mind – ‘Hammered’: The sweetest call-to-arms for getting ‘hammered in the daytime’ from Sydney outfit Richard in Your Mind – set to release their fourth album soon via Rice Is Nice.

Simon Winkler – Breaking and Entering

On Air: Thursday 4-7pm
Klo – ‘Make Me Wonder’: The project of Melbourne-based cousins Chloe Kaul and Simon Lam (also of Ill’s), ‘Make Me Wonder’ is a subtle and beautifully soulful song. All the elements seem to float in perfect balance and harmony.

Nun – ‘Uri Geller’: An all-time industrial pop-punk smash hit from Melbourne’s Nun; compelling on record and captivating live.

Tim Scott and Richard Stanley – Teenage Hate

On Air: Wednesday 12-2am
Soma Coma -‘Dust’: Taken from their upcoming LP on Cool Death records this is some frantic and crushing punk from the local four piece who take cues from the early Cleveland and current New York City and Melbourne punk scenes. Vocals are shot to hell and the guitar are blown and busted. The song is great. [Tim]

Eastlink- ‘Overtime’: It was recorded two years ago, only released overseas and they’ll probably only play one gig this year but this dissonant boogie with the otherwise goofy Johann going feral on vocals is this year’s number one hunka chunka. [Richard]
*Note: ‘Mosquito’ was the working title for ‘Overtime’, which is the official release title.

Anita Alphabet – Test Pattern

On Air: Wednesday 4-7pm
Roland Tings – ‘Floating on a Salt Lake’: Melbourne producer Roland Tings’ modus operandi is “prepare to jack!” Recently dropping essential dance-floor jam ‘Floating on a Salt Lake’, he signed to Modular late last year and was hand selected by Chet Faker to remix ‘1998’. A new EP is out now on Prins Thomas’ Internasjonal Records. So crank it up and maybe even download a strobe light app for full effect.

Movement – ‘Ivory’: ‘Ivory’ is Movement’s third offering from their debut EP, which had them working with The Weeknd’s Illangelo. Part R&B, part house, the official clip also comes with a ‘Danger, Will Robinson!’ warning. Unless you of course are employed at porn film making HQ. ‘Ivory’ is not only lush, sexy and dark, but might feature the most colossal guitar solo since Guns n Roses ‘Sweet Child of Mine’. Which leads me to my second warning. There is a high risk of breaking out into air guitar at 2.47 minutes, so watch this baby strictly after hours!

Jason Moore – Local &/Or General

On Air: Monday 8-10pm
Power Glove – ‘Power Core’: Stop whatever you’re doing now and listen to Power Core. 2.09 of power, not too much else around like it.

Dorsal Fins – ‘Monday Tuesday’: A studio project involving members of Saskwatch, Eagle & The Worm, The Bamboos, Fraser A. Gorman, The Bluebottles and a bunch more depending on who is in town. These guys have just made their first steps into the live arena and their set is full of hits! Expect to be hearing a lot more of these guys.

Anthony Carew – The International Pop Underground

On Air: Wednesday 8-10pm
Banoffee – ‘Got It’: Martha Brown’s wonky R&B feels hand-made and laden with ache, pitch-shifted voices and slippery programming creating a place where pop-song self-actualisation comes from sharing vulnerability.

Andras & Oscar- ‘Everytime I Go’: Andras Fox’s vintage productions are said to tap into the ‘rough’ and ‘raw’ feeling of early house, but the sensations seem more refined and romantic, his sad-hearted house jams soulfully sung by Oscar Key Sung.

Neil Rodgers – The Australian Mood

On Air: Thursday 8-10pm
River of Snakes – ‘Hacksaw’: Taken from the debut album for the Melbourne three piece band, combining all the best elements of rock – think Flipper, feedtime, Stooges all mixed together in their own unique way and you are then someway to understanding the joy of River of Snakes.

Livingstone Daisies – ‘Risking It All’: Second album of great pop/rock songs from the Melbourne based band that features Liz Stringer, Michael Barclay, Van and Cal Walker – a true super group!

Maquarie Fletcher – Golden Syrup

On Air: Monday 12-2am
RaRa – ‘Favourite Gatorade Flavour’: RaRa are a local Melbourne collective who are literally changing the game via Bmxes, being really cute, unbelievable live performances, based energy and above all effed grouse rhymes. Their Pink And Teal EP is potentially the best Australian EP ever released and their ethos and approach to collaboration and community is bigger than Wu-Tang.

Kira Beats – ‘First Offense’: Kira is a collective of three producers (Darcy Baylis, Sam Gill of Ara Koufax, AKMDE) who produce instrumentals. They have produced for Deniro Farrar and Milwaukee Banks amongst others and their sounds are lush, spacious and crystalline. Its interesting that three different personalities of each member of Kira completely makes for this well rounded but unique production sound. Lush is the main word I would go for its truly like listening to a comfy bed or a bed of flowers you can lie on. Just wanna spoon their stuff.
