There has been a major shake-up to the ownership of Corner Presents, showing that live music figurehead Richard Moffat – who was believed to no longer be involved in the company – now has an equal third stake in Corner Presents.
ASIC documents obtained by Tone Deaf reveal that as of the 3rd July this year, Moffat’s agency Way Over There now owns owns a third of shares in Corner Presents, who handles bookings and promotions for venues including Melbourne’s Corner Hotel, Shebeen, 170 Russell (formerly Billboard), Northcote Social Club and its sister Sydney venue: the Newtown Social Club.
The changes to Corner Presents share structure, demonstrate Moffat’s Way Over There Pty Ltd now shares an equal third stake alongside registered businesses of Loubeck Pty Ltd and Tanage Pty Ltd, the respective companies belonging to Matthew James Everett and Timothy James Northeast, both of the Corner Hotel. Mr. Northeast is also listed as the Director of Corner Presents.
The ownership shift is significant given the major shake-up in February when the staff and operations of Way Over There had reportedly been taken over by Corner Presents’ Ben Thompson who noted at the time he was ‘super excited’ to “have their entire team come and work for me under Corner Presents.” Meanwhile, Moffat continued live bookings – including for festivals Falls and Groovin The Moo – as a separate entity to Way Over There.

Aussies Land Biggest SXSW 2015 Registration Yet
Austin, Texas music industry conference South By Southwest has experienced its biggest number of first-week applications from Australian artists in its 28 year history. Within 24 hours of SXSW 2015 registrations opening last month, over 70 paid registrants had signed up for next year’s edition. By the end of the week, over 110 more have signed on. SXSW’s Australian, New Zealand, and Hawaiian ambassador, Phil Tripp, tells The Music Network “it’s the largest opening day and week we’ve ever had.” Mr. Tripp says that this year’s SXSW brought over 1,000 Australians representing music, film, and interactive media – the largest turnout ever. “In 2014 we had over 730 registrants across all three shows, 72 bands invited of which over 50 played,” he says. $15,000 Recording Grant & MusicNSW Grant Applications Now Open
Two major Aussie music grants are now open for submissions. Firstly, the PPCA and Australian Council of the Arts are jointly offering grants worth $15,000 to artists looking to record new music. Applications close on 25th November and interested musicians must be registered (for free) with the PPCA to apply. More information and details available here. It’s the second time the $15k recording grant has been offered, with initial recipients including Courtney Barnett, Ben Salter, Ainslie Wills, The Bamboo’s Lance Ferguson, and Grigoryan Brothers.
Meanwhile, MusicNSW has announced that Round 2 of its Quick Response Grant Program is now open for applications. The Grant offers funding of up to $850 per member of a touring party (artists and artist managers only) with a limit of $5,500, for those looking to attend conference and showcase opportunities such as Face The Music, AWME, and EMC. New Australian Booking Agency Launches
Former Modular booking agent Paul Stix has this week launched his new business venture UNDR ctrl – a booking, touring, and events agency representing a mix of electronic artists from Australia and abroad. Under the guise of The Musique Agency, Stix has headed up Modular’s bookings for the last four years, and UNDR ctrl’s launch roster features many familiar names from the label. That list includes Van She, Canyons, Bag Raiders, Wordlife, Pelvis (Naysayer & Gilsun), Ara Koufax, Roland Tings, Softwar, Albert Salt, UK’s Deep Shit, and many more.
STEP Announces ‘The Managers’ Edition
Following two successful events, STEP (Society of Tastemakers & Elegant People) are now presenting the third in a series of intimate panel discussions that focus on current practices and elements of the music industry, buffered with live music from an array of cutting-edge Aussie artists. ‘The Managers’, taking place at Melbourne’s Toff In Town on 24th September, will bring out insights from a panel of contemporary music managers. Appearing will be Nick O’Byrne (Courtney Barnett, Milwaukee Banks, BIGSOUND programmer), Tom Fraser (Big Scary, #1 Dads, Airling), Si Gould (Hiatus Kaiyote, Oscar Key Sung), and self-managed songwriter Jen Cloher (I Manage My Music founder). Nine South Australian Music Figures Awarded $5,000
In more music funding news, five artists and four industry figures have been named the recipients of the inaugural Stigwood Fellowship, an initiative of the Arts SA and Music Development Office (launched mid-June). Among those awarded a $5,000 leg-up are Adelaide hip-hop act Tkay Maidza, rock knockabouts Bad//Dreems, young songsmith Jesse Davidson, multi-instrumentalist Luke Godson aka Luke Millions (of The Swiss), and Echo and the Empress singer Skye Lockwood. The industry recpients are mgmt and booking agency Five Four Entertainment, Pilot Records, manager Daisy Brown, and arts consultant Jennifer Greer-Holmes. (via The Music Network)

Nick Allbrook Inks With AND Publishing
Pond frontman, ex-Tame Impala bassist, and prolific Perth solo artist Nick Allbrook has signed to Danny Rogers and Adam Tudhope’s AND Publishing. The Allbrook/Avery co-founder and Mink Mussel Creek multi-instrumentalist inks the deal ahead of the release of his much anticipated solo album Ganough, Wallis and Fatuna (out via Spinning Top Records in September), fans can get a free download of LP track ‘Whispers Of Beauty’ here. Allbrook is also set to appear at BIGSOUND this September.
Spookyland Lands International Label Deal
Sydney singer-songwriter Marcus Gordon, aka Spookyland, has become the first Australian artist to sign with respected US label Canvasback, joining a roster that includes Grouplove, Alt-J, The Orwells. Pegged as “Sydney’s answer to Bob Dylan“, Spookyland’s new single ‘Rock And Roll Weakling‘ will be released Stateside in September via Canvasback (an Atlantic Records subsidiary). Spookyland will also head to the US this October for a showcase at New York’s CMJ following an appearance at BIGSOUND this September.
Darren Middleton Joins The 123 Agency Roster
Powderfinger guitarist-turned-solo artist Darren Middleton has become the latest artist to join Melbourne’s growing 123 Agency roster. The Melbourne-based producer and songwriter issued his solo debut, Translations, last year and is hitting the road as support for Busby Marou’s Australin Tour this month, kickstarting in Baroque, Katoomba NSW tomorrow. Rice Is Nice Go On Signing Spree
Independent Sydney label Rice Is Nice has signed three new artists and announce the release of six new albums. Joining the Rice Is Nice camp is Geelong garage rockers The Frowning Clouds (releasing new album Legalize Everything September 12), cosmopolitan pop project Lia Mice (issuing I Love You October 10), and You Beauty for new LP Jersey Flegg. Rounding out the Rice Is Nice release schedule is SPOD’s Taste The Sadness (Aug 22), Richard In Your Mind’s Ponderosa (Aug 29), and Donny Benet’s Weekend At Donny’s (Sep 26).
