Melbourne’s The Infants are just about to release their debut EP LOW RUMBLE on September 5th. Self described as “somewhere between drag races and Sunday drives”, the four piece produce garage psych-pop infused with krautrock drum beats.

Recorded by long time friend, Archer Moore in the band’s basement and mastered By Adam Dempsey at Jack the Bear Deluxe Mastering, LOW RUMBLE is an incredibly exciting EP from a new local band worth keeping your eye on.

Intro

LOW RUMBLE is our second EP. Recorded and produced by our close friend and incredibly talented man, Archer Moore (Gang Darts) in our basement in Brunswick.

Halves

“‘Halves’ was recorded hastily and it unexpectedly impressed us. It is the age-old story of the prevailing B side.

‘Halves’ was the first song to come from somewhere unworldly us – while the drum machine whirled away on a loop, Blaise (Adamson) messed about with some east coast vibes on the Casio tone (we had been listening to a lot of Cypress Hill at the time) Christopher (Morse) brought his silky swaggy bass line, which had been floating in and out of improv sessions for a little while and after manically trialling the keyboard melody on her floor at home, Blaise came back to us with the re-assembled skeleton of a song.

It wasn’t until we had recorded it and Anthony (Morse) had blessed it with an off tap jazzy vibes guitar solo, that we realised; what we once thought was us trying to play hip hop, had become something quite unique and special.”

Only Forever

“‘Only Forever’ again came from an improv jammy jam session like most of our songs do. We are quite precious of this song; we see it as being far less superficial in comparison to our other recorded music, and were careful to keep it that way. It’s a gut wrencher and we feel a little gut wrenched when we play it.

Before being recorded the song relied a lot on our dynamic playing as a group, and a lot of emotive expressions that come from aspects of Blaise’s performance. These bits can be hard to transpose within a home recording session, and something we tried to be aware of when going to record it.

It isn’t exactly how it is live, but we prepared for it to be different so that fact doesn’t de value the song at all, you just have to find the right place to listen to it.”

Ape

“‘Ape’ is a totally different approach to the other songs on this EP. It’s a display of the deep danky tonal pallet we have formed as a group, what we call LOW RUMBLE. Some of the soundscape-y type stuff used (especially coming from Blaises vocals) are dominant factors of our live performance that we have never really had the chance to put to a recording before.

Topically it comes across as being, maybe a bit superficial as it is quite repetitive and very simple, but in the context of the EP it’s a very crucial part of the LOW RUMBLE story. It’s a turning point, and that’s why it doesn’t make much sense. Because when things are changing it might take you a little while to catch up.

It takes a few listens to get to know it, but once you get to know it, that thing sitting on your shoulder makes sense.

Stranger

“It was written by Blaise and Anthony, about two summers ago on a Yamaha keyboard on a couch, in a very dark and air-conditioned room. A combination of some crunk ass bass lines and some manic punk/soul/Kokiri Forest vibe mash-ups somehow make what some people call a song.

‘Stranger’ is a bit of a theatre piece. It’s slightly unrefined and so says a lot about our collaborative process as a group.

Sometimes it might seem out of place in terms of the colours it provokes in your mind, but I see its peculiarity and imagery as a great summery of, and end to the “LOW RUMBLE” story.”
