Following their recent successful UK tour, and support from the likes of BBC 6 Music, Canadian rock outfit July Talk will be heading to our shores for an accelerated tour including shows at BIGSOUND.

Right after the band’s Australian visit, July Talk will drop their debut self-titled album on September 22 (Sleepless Records/Polydor), giving local auidences a special live taste of what to expect from the debut.

We asked July Talk to shed some light on which Canadian bands are turning them on right now.

Alvvays

“I’m pretty sure Alvvays has been to Australia, but if they are new to you, it’s important you check them out. They’re a band that needs to be in everyone’s headphones. Smart songwriting that makes you feel like you’re 15 and falling in love.”

Suuns

“Epic, no wave, heavy drawl from Montreal. Produced by Jace Lasek from Besnard Lakes (another great Canadian band). Relatively new discovery for us. We haven’t stopped playing it our van for the last couple of years.”

Eamon McGrath

“Eamon played guitar in July Talk for the first year of the band but left to work on his solo material. He tours relentlessly in Europe and Canada, but is relatively unknown in Australia. His album Young Canadians is one of our favourites. Staggering lyrics. Check out his video for Great Lakes, directed by Peter from July Talk!”

PUP

“So heavy. So fun. Label mates of Alvvays, these guys will never stop touring and they are so much fun to be around. They are one of those bands that remind you how awesome your life is. Every show feels like a riot. This video provides a bit of insight into just how crazy their shows get.”

Weaves

“A truly original sound. Morgan Waters has been in great Canadian bands for years, his songwriting collaboration with singer Jasmyn Burke is really playful in a crushingly loud, Pavement meets Rihanna kind of way.”

Lowell

“Try to not love this song. Having spent time in the UK after leaving Canada a few years ago, she’s now back in Toronto about to release a new album. She writes such catchy songs, and leaves a lot of space her songs to breathe. Check it.”
