Ariel Pink is not a boring guy. Whether he’s employing 80s synths to sing the praises of a nymphomaniac (such as on “Symphony Of The Nymph” with his band Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti), or confessing that I’m living with my mom and dad/Couldn’t put the bong down way back on 2004’s “The Doldrums”, the man has long centred his music around all things slightly oddball.

With new track ‘Put Your Number In My Phone’, from upcoming album pom pom, Pink more or less keeps a lid on his wilder side. Instead he offers up a mild mannered tune built upon a bed of halcyon, Americana-melodic guitars, making quite a sweetly romantic ode to the act of scoring someone’s phone number.

The kooky curve ball characteristic of Pink’s music still comes into play with the full-toned, Morrisey-esque vocals, which give the track the curious effect of sounding like two disparate songs spliced together. Like most of the artist’s back catalogue, it’s peculiar, but it works.
