Out of the 52 weeks in a year, Melbourne Music Week has got to be one of our favourites. With the week of November 14 getting closer and closer, we thought we’d help you sift through the action-packed program to recommend our 7 favourite events.

MMW have once again pulled out all the stops this year to bring a tonne of incredible local talent to our wonderful city. Here’s our choice picks of the musical delights on offer to see, hear, and get amongst.

A Winged Victory For The Sullen

Where? Melbourne Recital Centre, 31 Sturt Street, Southbank
When? 7:30pm- 9pm Saturday 15th November
Why? A Winged Victory For The Sullen’s sound is a mass of beautiful contradictions. Their performance at Melbourne Melbourne Recital Centre’s Elisabeth Murdoch Hall will be an extravagant display of haunting orchestral epics, moody minimalism, and stunning melodies. Austere yet lavish, classical but contemporary, downbeat but ultimately uplifting, your breath may or may not be taken.

Cut Copy (DJ) + Andras & Oscar + Roland Tings

Where? Queen Victoria Market, Corner of Victoria St and Elizabeth St
When? 4pm- 1am, Saturday 15th November
Why? Cut Copy are launching a new compilation record Oceans Apart, which features the best of Melbourne’s vast and deep electronic scene, who are not only defining the sound of the city but the sound of the world. And so, the Grammy-nominated band have invited leisure-house wizards Andras & Oscar, deep cut specialist Roland Tings, percussive-dance-funk jammers No Zu, disco-pop revivalists World’s End Press, and more, for one helluva night. Bring your dancing shoes.

Oneohtrix Point Never

Where? Queen Victoria Market, Corner of Victoria St and Elizabeth St
When? 7pm – 1am, Friday 21st November
Why? Underground beat makers Oneohtrix Point Never (OPN) and Robin Fox are showcasing their mesmerising abstract electronica at what will be their debut performances at MMW. OPN is one of the most critically-lauded electronic artists in recent years, with his avant-garde sound constantly defying definition and categorisation. Live, it’s a dazzling display of experimentation, complimented by the captivating psychedelic visuals by artist Nate Boyce. This one is set to be a multi-sensory tingling galore.

Guerre + Banoffee + Milwaukee Banks

Where? Queen Victoria Market, Corner of Victoria St and Elizabeth St
When? 7.30pm – 12am, Monday 17th November
Why? Local cultural bible SPOOK Magazine are flexing their taste-making muscles by curating a bill with the crème dela crème of our country’s current crop of trend-bending up-and-comers. Prolific Sydney-based producer Lavurn Lee (Black Vanilla, Cassius Select) will be there to play atmospheric electronica as Guerre, Melbourne gal Martha Brown aka Banoffee is bringing her synth-laden, body-bopping bedroom R&B anthems, alongside wordsmith duo currently redefying Australian rap in 2014, Milwaukee Banks. Huge.

20,000 Days On Earth (Screening)

Where? Rooftop Cinema, 7/252 Swanston St, Melbourne
When? 8pm – 11pm, Thursday 20th November
Why? Before they officially open for the season, Melbourne’s favourite summertime cinema warm up the surround sound system with a three-day series of music films especially programmed for MMW. The highlight of course being 20,000 Dys on Earth, the Sundance-acclaimed biopic about Australia’s favourite morose poet, Nick Cave.

Beaches + Laura Jean + Pikelet

Where? Queen Victoria Market, Corner of Victoria St and Elizabeth St
When? 12pm—5pm, Saturday 22nd November
Why?  Chapter Music are presenting Chapterfest 22, a jam-packed, blissed-out afternoon of brand new tunes, rare reunions and new acts to celebrate its 22nd birthday. Psych-rock deities Beaches are performing new material supported by Hobart-Melbourne noise punks Little Ugly Girl, stunning folkstress Laura Jean, synth-pop masters Pikelet, analogue pop dreamers Minimum Chips, as well as Backstabbers, a new outfit created by members of Dick Diver and School Of Radiant Living.

The Bombay Royale

Where? NGV, 180 St Kilda Rd, Melbourne
When? 7:00pm, Friday 14th November
Why? NGV’s Friday Nights series is returning in style with The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk. It’s the first international exhibition paying homage to JPG’s iconic career and irreverent designs, and NGV is the only Australian venue it’s showing at. With 11-piece musical ensemble The Bombay Royale and tropical space maestros Cumbia Cosmonauts responsible for the live soundtrack, it doesn’t get much more exclusively #fashun than this.
