EL-P, one half of critically acclaimed hip-hop duo Run The Jewels, has confirmed that the much talked-about Meow The Jewels crowdfunding campaign, launched with a view to seeing their recently unveiled second album remade with cat sounds, has hit its $45,100 target with 11 days left on the campaign.

For those playing catch up, Meow The Jewels was a joke pre-order package touted in the lead-up to the release of Run The Jewels 2, the second album by the titular duo, which also features Atlanta rapper Killer Mike.

Upon announcement of the new album, RTJ claimed that for the hefty sum of $40,000, one lucky fan could get their hands on the Meow Jewels package, which features a remixed version of Run The Jewels 2 made entirely out of cat noises.

However, the joke took on a whole new life after a Run The Jewels fan launched a Kickstarter campaign to bring the joke album to life. At the time of publication, the campaign has raised $55,522 from 2,363 backers.

Not only has the campaign been supremely successful, but it’s also received the nod of approval from both members of Run The Jewels, as well as a host of big-name producers who’ve offered their services in giving RTJ2 a feline reworking.

Earlier this month, El-P took to Instagram to announce that the “pet project” would feature contributions from himself, Just Blaze, SKYWLKR, Zola Jesus, Baauer, Prince Paul, The Alchemist, Boots, Dan the Automator, Geoff Barrow of Portishead, Nick Hook, and Solidified Sun.

Many of the contributors have been showing their support on social media, too. The Alchemist, Zola Jesus, SKYWLKR, and Just Blaze have all been pushing the campaign via Twitter and Facebook, and Just Blaze, best known for his collaborations with Jay-Z, Eminem, and Kendrick Lamar, has offered to release a kit of all the drum sounds he used in his productions “from 2001-2005″ if the campaign is successful.

El-P has also promised that if the campaign is successfully funded, he will donate all of the proceeds he receives to charity. According to the campaign page, the rapper will donate his share to help the families of the late Eric Garner and Mike Brown, two US residents who were slain by police in separate incidents earlier this year.

The pair have now unveiled a hilarious, low-budget trailer to promote the new project, which mostly consists of images of cats superimposed over explosion and violence-filled scenes from classic flicks like Big Trouble In Little China and The Big Lebowski.

According to The Guardian, a spokesperson for Run The Jewels says that El-P has already started auditioning cats.
