New Zealand post-rock legends Jakob recently released their new album Sines which arrives eight year after their last release.

The record’s lead single ‘Blind Them With Science’, is a stunning post-rock affair, soaring and sonically adventurous, however still true to the Jakob sound.

In celebration of the album the band are preparing to embark on a long-awaited new set of tour dates. Jakob will bring Sines to life onstage from Wednesday, 26th November at the Republic Bar in Hobart, cruising up the East Coast before finishing up at Crowbar in Brisbane on Sunday, 30th November.

Being New Zealand rock stalwarts themselves, we chatted with the band who gave us a run down of who they believe to be the the greatest New Zealand bands of all time.

HDU (High Dependency Unit)

“These guys were a huge influence on us when we first formed. Their dynamics were amazing and the way they delivered their music with such sincerity was something that we wanted in our music as well. The track ‘Lull’ is bliss. Their EP ‘Higher’ left a big impression on us, as did the album ‘Sum Of The Few’. Very important band.”

Shihad

“As teens in another band prior to Jakob, we played support for these guys in the early 90s. It was a real eye opener for us as young chaps, they were heavy and totally going for it and it kicked us into gear about being serious as a band. ‘Envy’ from Killjoy is a song that was a big inspiration for us.”

Bailter Space

“The volume and tone of these guys live was a big influence. They sounded huge and hypnotic. Robot World and Thermos are great albums. The song ‘Argonaut’ from Capsule set our minds racing about playing songs that lasted more than 10 minutes.”

Straitjacket Fits

“Their album Melt is brilliant! Beautiful album, a NZ classic. Two songwriters colliding is an amazing thing at times. ‘Skin To Wear’, ‘Missing Presumed Drowned’, and ‘Down In Splendour’ are pure gems.

Skeptics

Amalgam and Chowder Over Wisconsin are great records. ‘AFFCO’ is such a crazy song. The video also has the singer dressed in some scary attire. Really creative band. Nick Roughan was also our sound guy for a while.”

Letterbox Lambs

“These guys took us under their wings in a way, by getting us shows with them in Wellington and Auckland, giving us places to stay the night, feeding us, very generous lads! They made bottles fall off walls in bars when they played.”
