The songs of Depeche Mode are being turned in to a musical, in errr, Malta of all places. Controversial Maltese theatre company Unifaun is presenting the show entitled Playing The Angel in Valletta later this year and apparently it, like the band, is a seedy and drug addled show. Playwright Adrian Buckle says “Depeche Mode are not ABBA or Queen. The story can’t be a happy one. It is a story of two boys growing up, coming of age and discovering love. They are abused, used, taken advantage of. It’s their sad way of discovering life”. It remains to be seen whether the story includes family friendly vignettes such as the notorious 1996 incident in Los Angeles when singer Dave Gahan overdosed on a speedball of cocaine and heroin and was pronounced clinically dead for several minutes.
